I am someone who has rented for many years and would LOVE to own a house! Unfortunately, my husband and I have made some financial mistakes in the past (which we HAVE learned from) and also live on a fixed income and have no downpayment money. Help from family isn't possible for this...and we prefer being independent as much as possible, anyway. We just want a small, decent house for ourselves, teenaged son, and pets. We are renters who DO care about every place we have lived in...we just want a chance and need the financial help from a lender! I am so tired of dealing with the noise, etc. of neighbors in the same dwelling. (currently, we live in the upstairs of an older house(small apartment) with a young couple below). They slam doors, let their dog loose in the yard to toilet anywhere, also the cooking/other smells (ugh) and we can't regulate the heat AND hot water for showers is a BIG problem!! I apologize for the long post...first time I have "vented" about this online...just letting homeowners know what renters deal with! (Minnesota)

And what would cure this? 10-20% down on the house you intend to purchase. No credits, no gimmicks, no games. You save enough for a decent down payment, you have a vested interest in your house and your neighborhood. This is one big reason why so many neighborhoods in this country are in the toilet. People buy properties at zero down and rent them out to literally anyone. Renters could give a rats a*s about the neighborhood, thus the crime etc. follows them in.
Just another typical case where government involvement screws us.
