Pawlenty vetoes medical marijuana, supporters vow to push amendment

medmarijuanaGov. Tim Pawlenty vetoed a bill to legalize marijuana for terminally ill patients late Friday evening, saying he sides with law enforcement opposition to the bill. Bill proponents say they will introduce a constitutional amendment to bypass the governor, noting overwhelming popular support in the state on the issue.

“While I am sympathetic to those dealing with end-of-life illnesses and accompanying pain, I stand with law enforcement in opposition to this legislation,” Pawlenty said in his veto letter.

“I’m disappointed in the governor’s action, but I’m not giving up,” Rep. Tom Rukavina, DFL-Virginia, said in a press release. “This would have been the narrowest, strictest medical marijuana law in the country, but the bottom line remains that there are patients suffering terribly who need protection, and I won’t stop till they are protected.”

Joni Whiting, whose testimony of finding marijuana for her dying daughter brought tears to many legislators’ eyes, had harsh words for Pawlenty.

“The governor thinks I’m a criminal for allowing my daughter some comfort during the last months of her life,” she said. “I don’t know how he sleeps at night, but I do know I’m not giving up until others in my daughter’s situation are protected.”

Polls show the issue is popular with voters with popular support at over 60 percent for more than a decade.

“Since the governor has refused to listen to reason or to the overwhelming majority of Minnesotans, we have no choice but to bypass him and take this directly to the people through a constitutional amendment,” said Sen. Steve Murphy, DFL-Red Wing.

Actually, the veto was the best thing to happen in Minnesota. It created an uproar with voters and people in Minnesota as well as other places in the U.S. on this subject. I am afraid Mr. Pawlenty will see more and more bills pass for medical marijuana throughout the country, but I also believe the people in the U.S. are ready to fully legalize marijuana all together.

Right now, the U.S. is in a deep recession, a miserably failed “drug war”, and more knowledge on the plant which carries the same criminal conviction most places as crack/cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, and other hard drugs. The arguments for maintaining marijuana prohibition are and always have been ridiculous.

You can’t tell me that legalizing marijuana will be allowing another mind altering drug be available to the citizens of out country. Sorry prohibitionists, but marijuana is already available to the people who would use it. Legalizing marijuana isn’t going to make someone shove a joint in your mouth and make you smoke it.

I voted Republican the last 3 elections, due to my beliefs that Federal Government should remain small and allow states to do as they please. And medical marijuana won the biggest fight it could have the past week or so, the U.S. Supreme Court decided not to rule against state’s own medical marijuana bills passed, truly a Traditional Republican move.

I don’t care if you are for or against marijuana, but please if you are against full legalization realize that people aren’t going to quit their jobs and stop raising families due to marijuana being legalized. For crying out loud, marijuana is in fact many states top agricultural crop or at least within the top 5. Realize much of the information you base your arguments off of is information that was made up or preformed in a bias study. It is already available to anyone with enough gumption or want to use it.

I will end this comment with President Nixon’s quote, “I see another thing in the news summary this morning about it. That’s a funny thing, every one of the bastards that are out for legalizing marijuana is Jewish. What the Christ is the matter with the Jews, Bob, what is the matter with them? I suppose it’s because most of them are psychiatrists.”

Another Nixon quote I love is this about marijuana, “At least with liquor I don’t lose motivation.” In most states simple possession of marijuana carries a more severe punishment than drunken driving… Scary.

Good day.

We need to begin to remove all of our leaders who are against medical marijuana from office nationwide starting in 2010.

Marijuana prohibition has been a total failure and is perhaps this country’s greatest mistake. Not only has it created criminals out of nearly a third of the country’s populace, it costs our society billions of dollars every year, creates a strain on our prison system, and has little or no effect on marijuana use in the US. In some cases, prosecuting marijuana use has turned non-violent, middle class kids into violent and unpredictable, career criminals. Once a person has a criminal conviction on their record, they are far less likely to find a good job and become a useful member of society. Other countries with more liberal drug laws have much lower rates of drug addiction among their people. “saying he sides with law enforcement opposition to the bill”

Notice how it is always law enforcement that opposes these changes. It’s sad they are more concerned about getting a fat paycheck and keeping as many LEO’s employed than fixing a problem.

I spent over 20 years in law enforcement (LEO). During that time, I learned that those in the LEO field who oppose marijuana are the same ones who uneducated and hired on as LEOs by their daddies, brothers, or uncles. Those LEOs who were actually educated supported legalization of THC. My new career, with a Masters in Psych, is a drug and alcohol treatment therapist. In my new field, I have already seen that people who smoke marijuana typically do not have issues. They are well adjusted and live productive lives. Moreover, I see alcohol as more dangerous than THC since it is not only psychologically addicting, it is physically addicting. If LEOs want to wory about drugs, they need to spend their time worrying about meth., crack, cocaine, and heroin–not THC. As far as Pawlenty is concerned, perhaps he will have time to obtain some education when he loses his job as Gov. of Minnesota.

I was hopeful that Pawlenty would see how the bills passed through every committee on the way to his desk and that maybe, just for a moment, he would ask the opinion of someone, -anyone,- other than law enforcement. That never happened, obviously, and he chose to play political games with the lives of seriously and terminally ill people. There really is no word for such a person other than heartless. The bill was so watered-down and far-removed from its original intent that it really was no longer the same bill that no less than 6 committees had voted in favor of. Allowing the people to vote on this matter really is the only way that this is going to get signed into law as long as self-promoting hypocrites like Pawlenty are in office. I hope the politicians are taking notes that the “tough on crime” playbook doesn’t work when sick and dying people are involved. People find withholding medication to be deplorable. (What a shocker.)

Funny how the law enforcement opponents to the medical marijuana bill are now up to their eyeballs in hot water with the MN Gang (Drug) Task Force fiasco. Michael Campion? Check. Richard Stanek? Check. How did they find the time to testify against this bill with all of the rampant corruption going on right beneath their noses and still find time to bend King Pawlenty’s ear? Amazing. How much of the missing forfeited drug cash makes its way into political coffers? Think about it.

Governor,
If you were a smart polititian then you would have signed that bill. Not only the folks that voted for your sorry ass, but for those sick people that this drug really helps. I will be shocked if you get reelected !! Personally, i would like to thank you mr. Pawlenty, as it will make us stand up and fight people like you, and what you represent. What was you thinking ?? Even citizens that don’t smoke pot will not like your decision.
This illustrates how ignorant, and uncaring you politicians are. Legalize pot, Everyone knows it’s the senseable thing to do, and so do you Mr. Pawlenty. I hope you sleep well tonight, thinking about that citizen that can’t get the drug that helps him or her cope with life and the children missing their parents because they’re in jail for pot. And the black market that folks like you create and maintain, so you can keep your jails full and the prison guards are contented. Gotta justify the need for more cops and prisons. Sleep well Mr. Pawlenty !! And i hope this costs you your career !!
Lowest regards from a concerned citizen,
Jim

“I stand with Law Enforcement on this issue”. Law Enforcement? It is a pretty sick society when cops have more say in medicine than doctors do. How is Law Enforcement even remotely qualified to have an opinion on this issue? And why does anybody even listen? Pawlenty is a jerk. He needs to be voted out.

Mr. Pawlenty,
How can you as a Republican, a party that supposedly stands for less government, veto a bill that helps sick people? Plain and simple, PROHIBIITONISTS are now in the minority. The citizens are way ahead of the curve when it comes to being educated on the ABJECT FAILURE OF THE DRUG WAR. The DRUG WAR is nothing more than an antiquated idea dreamed up by Richard Nixon ( a criminal ) who waged a war on the US citizens, a war rooted in racism and prejudice.
The facts are as follows: The $69 BILLION/year DRUG WAR has accomplished nothing except to fill our prisons with NON VIOLENT DRUG OFFENDERS. There are 2.3 MILLION people incarcerated in the US, atleast 25% of whom are NONVIOLENT DRUG OFFENDERS, while that same number, or about 500,000 KNOWN, CONVICTED, REGISTERED SEX OFFENDERS are free in society due to overcrowding. As a mom, grandmother, and former law enforcement officer, this outrages me! We don’t lock up people for cigarettes and alchohol, the deadly drugs. We need to LEGALIZE, TAX AND REGULATE MARIJUANA (the one substance that has NEVER killed anyone). We learned our lesson in history with alcohol prohibition, that it puts people like Al Capone in control and causes much crime for a BLACK MARKET, much like the border war with the cartels today, only now, on a much larger scale. Marijuana (HEMP) is the number one cash crop in the US, yet it goes untaxed, unregulated. George Washington grew HEMP at MT VERNON, Thomas Jefferson grew HEMP at Monticello. Mr. Pawlenty, PLEASE EDUCATED YOURSELF! Heaven forbid you get cancer like some of my family members. They will get Marijuana, with our without your permission to help them. I hope you never have to face this same choice or fear of having your home invaded simply over a plant…A PLANT that has been used for thousands of years in every culture and has HELPED MANY! To learn more from a law enforcement perspective go to: http://www.leap.cc and learn how to lessen the incidence of DEATH, DISEASE, CRIME AND ADDICTION ALL MADE WORSE BY THE DRUG WAR.
Sincerely,
LEAPCOP

How could he do that??? And say he is for the people??? Where is his compassion, he says he feels it. That he feels sorry for us. But words are cheep!!!!!. It is a time for a new word order, Everyone need to stand up and say enough. We are free people according to what this land was founded on. And in every democracy there must be some challenge to keep them working for the people who pay the way in this country. But it must be done in peace. Bloodshed only continues on the wrongs we are living with.

All of these comments are awesome! Paulenty lost some serious love on this one . I got raided by the cops and they kept asking for cash. Wheere’s the cash stash at? These dudes looked like bikers when they came in but were just a bunch of not bikers but Somali Pirates looking to fuck up my life and confiscate money and other objects. It sucks that im a great person and some one snitched me out. Man what tasty sugary goodness i had(it looked like fruit!).The war on weed continues and the cops i guess need their jobs to keep busting our young people and giving them records for some shit that should be as legal as alcohol(Doesnt alcohol mutate babies and kill people on the road).Thats our fucked up society i guess. The way they came in was pretty shady and they dont need much to kick down your door these days. I ultimately would like to be a caregiver or head of an organization but it looks like i lost this year. I am glad i found this website and could see all these great comments!!YOU PEOPLE ROCK!!! People will always find a way to get pot. I have a lots to say about this topic and I am almost ready to move to California and pay their taxes and love their governor cuz this one is definetely biased. I feel sorry for all the people that have to suffer uncomfortably because medical marijuana is illegal in this state. MArijuana is definitley one of the best natural drugs around it causes no problems but “makes you either happy or hungry”(Kat Williams the comedian you gotta see this guy for some good laughs). People are right when they say that our younger generation is taking more prescriptions than ever. Holy shit ive seen more kids on prescriptions than when i was in school. And the side effects are serious like depression and serious mood swings, suicidal thoughts. So what is really the problem with pot? I really havent seen any problems in my lifetime. Has anyone else? Lets make it legal and tax it!! $4.00-$9.00 dollars a cigarette at the local grocery store(high grade). This way you take the money away from the drug-dealers/cartels(plus that shit had mold spores on it sometimes if you look close) and put the money towards our parks or something beneficial. That way everyones happy!

MAYBE WE SHOULD ALL JUST ***STOP VOTING***. Why have faith in a government that does nothing but take money from you…and keep more money for themselves. Obviously by this statement from Pawlenty shows how corrupt our system IS….sounds like someone in the “law enforcement” paid him off…sshhh. Is our crime rate going down? Are there less deaths from “drug related incidences?? Maybe the MN law enforcement should show some improvement for all these years that “their drug war has been successful”.

Why vote?

This is absolutely disgusting. Pawlenty would rather take the advise of a police officer over a doctor regarding our health care. Does this mean that we should start calling the police station for our medical needs. Are there any doctors out there that think that the years and years they went to M.D. schooling is worthless after that statement from the “governor”? I hope someone in Pawlenty’s family gets terminally ill!
