Opening night of the NFL season will be Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. EST with a match-up between the Washington Redskins and the New York Giants. Going head to head with it that night will be Sen. John McCain’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention. The NFL has moved the game up by 90 minutes to accommodate the Republicans, but will it be enough?

What do hardcore football fans, many of whom are partisan Republicans, do if the game goes late? Will the NFL overshadow the RNC? From DemConWatch:

It’s all those independent voters and football fans in Connecticut, New Jersey and Virgina that are just not going to pay any attention to John McCain that evening. Teams from the two biggest political media markets will be opening their season on the night of McCain’s speech. How lucky can the Democrats get?
