Norm Coleman cleaned up a line from the movie “City Slickers” in his keynote speech to a far-right audience Thursday. He recited a scene as a segue to his theme for Republican renewal: in a word, “accountability.” Ironically, the four-letter word he censored for the benefit of the conservative-values crowd is one that could yet get him in trouble. Videos after the jump (listen for the lessons: “Nobody likes a hypocrite” and “We need to compete … in the ethernet”).
Here are the first YouTube videos to emerge from Coleman’s trip to St. Louis Thursday for the Conservative Heartland Leadership Conference.
In this one, a sympathetic videographer catches up with Coleman in the ballroom for a quick interview. Coleman — whose campaign Website left donors’ personal financial data exposed earlier this year — says the key for Republicans is to compete “in the ethernet”:
Coleman delivers his “City Slickers” dialogue in this clip from his keynote speech (the “hypocrite” line is at the end):
And here’s the scene from “City Slickers” Coleman tried to replicate:
Coleman’s telling has Billy Crystal asking Jack Palance, “What’s the meaning of life?” Palance, playing the character Curly, holds up one finger. “Your finger?” asks Crystal. “No,” replies Palance. “One thing. Do that and your life will make sense.”
Palance’s actual line: “One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and everything else don’t mean shit.”
Coleman might have simply been mixed up — in an op-ed this year, he misattributed a saying to Hubert Humphrey.
Either way, the line he dropped has a certain resonance with the most incriminating line attributed to his friend and benefactor Nasser Kazeminy in pending civil suits that allege Kazeminy funneled cash to Coleman: “United States Senators don’t make shit.”
Note: Minnesota Public Radio has audio of Coleman’s remarks to reporters Thursday.

You missed the best part: “Nobody likes a hypocrite!”

Can Coleman make a run for governor? He would have to turn Republican disgust that he lost to a candidate republicans loathe and thought would be easy to beat into a desire for revenge for the “stolen” senate race. If he does that, then he’s truly a tough opponent for who ever gets the DFL nomination. Is Coleman that good a politician?

By gum you’re right, David. Norm buried the lede! … so I added it to mine. Thanks for the heads-up, don’t know where mine was.

He’s so tedious, it doesn’t matter what he says, there’s no energy, he causes fidgeting and twitching in the seat, discomfort and adjusting. “Let’s see, if I fold my hands maybe he’ll get exciting, no, well, what if I cross my legs, no, well…, gee, he sure is boring…”

The future of the GOP is “in the ethernet”? I’m not a tech guy, but isn’t ethernet used for local area networks? That’d mean the GOP is a closed network, disconnected from everyone else, allowing those in the network to talk to themselves.

That’s a pretty good description of the current state of the GOP right now, Paul.

Haw can anybody of any political stripe support that man? norm Coleman has opportunist weasel stamped in the wrinkles of his forehead. To watch serious Republicans give this asshat money and power is just beyond stupidity. He was a horrible Democrat and now he is a horrible Republican because his only true loyalty is to his dick.

The Ethernet? Sounds like something Joe Biden would say.

Coleman has been an effective politician, even though he is without principle. But the only way he could succeed is a three way race, he could never get a majority. That’s how Pawlenty did it.

Perhaps the GOP can become a little more biblical-savvy and revert back to the networking protocol used by Noah and his family – The ARCNET. All GOP-friendly women and minorities can become part of their Token Ring.

Perhaps he was thinking of a two word “Ether Net” where the wounded elephants could go to toke up on ether and let the world drift along on their fantesy ideal rich for the rich Republican life.

Coleman lost me when it turned out he had no evidence, yet kept appealing. An utter waste of time and money. Nobody using his own time and money would do that.
