I do not think that the fiat of news control by the newspaper industry was a good thing.
There was no "check on power", institutional memory was more like 1984 memory hole operations,
history was changed at the next press run to reflect the controlling institutional view and
any "investigation" type reporting was so controlled that we got nothing but OJ Simpson
and stained dress stories. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Fewer forests eaten by pulp mills would be more beneficial to the environment than
a couple tons of used newsprint.

Good point, Mark Gisleson. I think Susan Young might have actually had other foods in mind, like ketchup, that are hard to find in glass anymore. Funny I didn't notice it though, since I've been steadily emptying a glass pickle jar all week.

You don't buy pickles in glass jars anymore? I've never seen them sold any other way! Spaghetti sauce is sold in glass jars, likewise salsa, condiments and pretty much everything else that used to be in glass is still in glass jars. Pop and water, otoh, seem to increasingly come in plastic.

But I only shop at Cub, Rainbow, Target and various Asian groceries. Obviously there are some super chains I've never heard about who sell food differently.

Congratulations to the residents of Minneapolis! We've been able to decrease the amount of deforestation needed to convey the news!
