Bachmann likens U.S. to Titanic, decries ‘gangster government’

Rep. Michele Bachmann took to the floor of the House of Representatives twice Tuesday, likening the United States to the Titanic and lambasting “gangster government” for meddling in carmakers’ affairs — though she boasts on her Web site of doing the same auto dealership-advocacy she decries Democrats for.

Here’s Bachmann on “gangster government” and the auto industry, after Rep. Todd Akin (full transcript):

It’s not too hard to guess who Bachmann might be talking about as she ramps up her rhetoric (full transcript):

One story that came out today, there is a dealership that I know of that applied to their Democrat [sic] Senator to appeal for help so that they could stay open. That Senator was able to arrange a meeting between the dealer and the officials at GM. We all know GM is now Government Motors because it’s owned by the American people. It’s been nationalized. There is no private corporations the way we used to think of GM. Now, the main stockholder is the American Government. So this Democrat Senator who was applied to for help was able to secure a meeting with General Motors and a car dealership, and they were able to get their dealership back.

Minnesota’s lone senator, Amy Klobuchar, was in the news for helping the Walser dealership in Bloomington gain one of only about a dozen reprieves for GM dealerships told earlier they must close.

Bachmann goes on in the same speech to twice cite conservative columnist and American Enterprise Institute fellow Michael Barone:  ”He said now we’ve moved into the realm of gangster government.”

But Bachmann’s own auto-industry meddling comes before Klobuchar’s in a news story posted on the Republican’s own Web site:

Congresswoman Michelle Bachman [sic] was on hand to lead the rally to save the dealership. She said she will take their fight to Washington on Wednesday when Chrysler leaders will be questioned by members of the senate about the future of local car dealers.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar will also take the fight and a petition signed by attendees of the rally to Washington.

In a separate speech yesterday (full transcript), Bachmann made an analogy between the United States and the most famous sinking ship:

Last weekend my family sat down and we were watching the commercial movie “Titanic.” And as I was listening to Dr. Burgess from Texas talk about the debt and the burgeoning debt load that the United States takes, once the ice gash came in the side of the Titanic, which we all remember was called the “unsinkable Titanic,” we think of the United States. Nothing can possibly sink the United States. We will always be a superpower. But one thing that has kept us a superpower has been freedom, free market economists. We are in the process of watching the deconstruction of free market economists before our very eyes, something we have never seen. But as the ice ripped that hole in the Titanic, water started being taken on, and the engineer came out and brought the blueprint of the Titanic. Water came into the first chamber, spilled over to the second, spilled over to the third, and by the time it filled up so many chambers, it was over. It was impossible to resurrect that ship.

It would be interesting to hear Bachmann extend the analogy to talk about the role that Titanic passengers’ economic class played in whether they survived or died.

Here’s Bachmann on the Titanic and the U.S. economy, after Rep. Steve King:

Update: ‘Unsinkable’ Bachmann deep in donations from Walser, whose rescue she mocked

The US as a country is now like the Titanic? And I thought Republicans always accused the Democrats of tearing down America.

What ever happened to that “morning in America” optimism that Republican-worshipped Reagan used to put on display? Handwringing about current problems won’t win back political power – the Republicans need to provide hope for change ….. no, wait, the Democrats have that covered now.

When Republicans are wringing their hands about the US in terms like gangster government, government czars, impending socialism and fascism …. do they wring only with their right hands?

ps …. have any “free market economists” been executed lately? Sounds that way from Rep. Bachmann’s remarks. I didn’t know we applied the death penalty for errors in economic understanding.

Mill, I think the Repubs are accusing the Dems of tearing down America with the Titanic comparison. I’m guessing they think “O” is the captian. Its probably likely both major political parties would move toward government/socialization type of spending so “whatever”.

OK, so are the first and second flooded chambers the doing of the current administration, Ms. Bachmann, and now it’s up to the Pubs to seal off the third chamber? Seems that the hole had already been ripped, emergency action is taking place to correct the errors of the previous captain of the “free market,” and that once the ship is steadied (if it can be) the current captain will turn things over to a new captain? Oh these analogies are fun, Michelle! Good job! I’ll only be worried when you stand on your desk in the House and decry yourself the “Queen of the Pubs,” with arms spread wide.

Yes, Bush piloted us into the iceberg and now Obama is now searching for lifeboats to launch. The current administration is stuck with cleaning up after another Republican disaster.

No, but their ideas died an ugly death in a head-on collision with reality.

So our only Senator is actually doing things for the people of this state and Michelle is shooting her mouth off while doing nothing. Would somebody please put a rag in that fools mouth? If you are not helping shut the hell up… isn’t this the idiot who made it harder for her constituents to get funds to rebuild a needed bridge?

Michelle why not run for Senator against Klobuchar and see how well you do? She is the perfect representative of the Minnesota Republican Party… a laughingstock of stupidity, greed and uselessness.

Sounds as if you Minnesotans love crony capitalism as long as you’re team is in charge. You will all make excellent members of the Stasi. While you continue to blame the last idiot for the financial crisis, your man continues the EXACT same policies. Still at war, deeper in debt, and the police state grows. Nothing changed sheeple. But I suppose when total collapse envelopes this country at least you’ll have your ‘hope for change’.

Check the Dealer’s FEC filings.

All his donations were to Repubs.

Including the Crazy Lady herself.

There’s a problem with Bachmann’s conspiracy theory, however. Paul Walser isn’t a Democrat. According to FEC records, he’s never donated a dime to a Democrat. In fact, he’s not only donated heavily to conservative Republicans, he’s actually contributed thousands to Bachmann.

According to FEC records, over the past decade Walser has contributed a total of $115,100 to Republicans and conservative PACs. Some highlights:

$6,700 to Michele Bachmann
$43,000 to the Minnesota Republican Party
$5,100 to Norm Coleman
$7,350 to Bush and McCain combined
$0 for Democrats
To sum it up: Michele Bachmann is pushing a conspiracy theory that the Obama administration is using the GM situation to reward its political supporters.

Her primary piece of evidence is a dealership in her own state owned and operated by a Republican who hasn’t contributed to a Democrat on the federal level in at least 10 years. Moreover, he’s contributed more than $100,000 to Republicans and conservatives, including $6,700 to Bachmann herself.

That leaves us with two possibilities: either the Obama administration are the least competent conspirators ever, or Michele Bachmann is a paranoid and delusional freak.

If Babs knew her history she would have known that the press came up with unsinkable. Even in the movie the ships designers says the Titanic could sink and that no ship is unsinkable. She was probably too busy fast forwarding past the naked parts.

I have to say that Michelle painted the sinking of the Titanic very vividly. Now I don’t even have to rent the movie anymore because she spoiled the end of it for me.

Whenever Michele Bachmann surfaces I am embarassed to admit being from Minnesota. Next time I am in the state I will stay away from her district because it has way to many people from the lunatic fringe if she can be re-elected.

The Republicans should pay her to keep her mouth shut and stay off TV if they want to regain credibility instead of riling up the far right of their right of center party.

Welcome to Fascism .. many of you seem to think this is a political game .. to me this is not a left/ right issue.. this is an Americans issue.. the American Dream is DEAD .. Liberty is DEAD,,, Government has no business interfering with propping up failed banks, failed car producers, failed news media… picking and choosing which businesses get subsidized.. which get taxed more than another .. this is not what I consider equal rights nor equal protection … Individual Sovereignty is DEAD and mob rule has overtaken the scene… the next stop is revolution .. and then Dictatorship.
Bye Bye American Pie.. welcome the the USSA … soon to be a third world wanna be nation..

Isn’t it funny that anyone who doesn’t agree with the current administration can so easily be labelled a “nutcase.” She is a woman, so she must be all the more crazy. Just throw her in the same goup as sarah Palin, who also has a target on her back.

What this woman is saying makes sense! The government has no right to decide which car dealerships stay open or close! These dealerships should be free to succeed or fail on thier own.

Bachmann has been criticized for lobbying on behalf of some dealerships top stay open now? What should she do? This is the system that the governmnet set up, and it is wrong. Let’s forget about whether these dealerships supported the democrats or not. IT IS WRONG FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO CHOOSE WICH ONES STAY OPEN OR CLOSE!

How long will the democrats blame the last administration? 4 yrs? 8 yrs? Personally, I believe the country was better off prior to Nov. 08. We cannot spend our way out of this mess. WAKE UP PEOPLE! Yes American people. The so called liberl movement of the 60′s and 70′s did not support Facism!

Next it will be healthcare, then other business. Soon all of our salaries will be determined by the government. The middle class will foot the bill and be hurt yet again. Hardworking Americans will be forced into government run clinics alongside gang members, while the wealthy will still pay for private insurance, including Obama. Healthcare is a privledge, not a right. If you are a gangmember who deals drugs brutalizes and murders, you do not deserve healthcare. If you are in this country illegally, you do not deserve healthcare. GET A JOB. Why don’t we give tax breaks to employers who pay for healthcare and make it affordable by free market competition.

There are too many out there who work the system. We have drug dealers who are on SSI. I know an entire family who collects SSI. They boast and call it “Stupid Money” they purposely act like they cannot spell their own name. This government run system is flawed, god help us all if they are in control of our healthcare. I feel like I’m living in the “Twilight Zone” and everyone has drak the koolaid! WAKE UP! Smack yourselves in the face!

At what point does one not use the word “paranoid”? I am amazed that so many Americans are apathetic to the idea that the president of the US could fire the head of GM as if he were the Big Boss and yet not be upset. Whoa! You get what you asked for. Unfortunately, some ignore history of other countries and do not see where government take-overs lead. Fine. Those who condemn Bachmann and others who look long-term versus short-term obviously do not mind the possibility of 2nd or 3rd world status here. When they age and find they can no longer expect medical care to enhance their lives (hip replacements, kneed replacements, laser surgery for macular degeneration), they may realize then that their children and grandchildren will reap the rewards of their acceptance of big government and massive spending and–essentially–an America totally unlike the one in which they grew up, the one that people of all other nations fight to move into. Too bad. Because of what’s happening now, we truly are losing independence and strength. Oh, well, fewer will come here; I suppose that’s a good thing. America as it was intended is gone.

Art Carney (and the rest of you who don’t get it) – that’s the point…it took connections in the government (Dems – as you say) to keep a privately owned business open. Walser’s business was not going under….GM (your government) was closing it. Your government was telling a privately owned business that they had to close up shop.

Of course, Bachmann stepped in to help a local dealership – she’s not contradicting herself. That’s what it took to save jobs in her district. Her point is that she and others (like Barney Frank) shouldn’t have to….private businesses that are making money and providing jobs in economic times like today should be allowed to operate, not be told they have to shut down by the government.
