Kersten’s St. Thomas column nothing ‘to be particularly concerned about,’ says her editor

Andy Birkey’s story suggesting that Star Tribune columnist Katherine Kersten borrows themes and language, er, liberally from fellow conservative media figures isn’t exactly new. Brian Lambert, in the Feb. 2007 issue of The Rake, wrote of “concern with Kersten’s near-lockstep choice of topics and point of view with influential conservative bloggers — chief among them Scott Johnson, one of the three primary authors at Powerlineblog.com and her friend of twenty years.” He noted that of some 135 columns written by Kersten prior to December 2006, around 75 were lauded by Johnson on Power Line.

Sid Hartman Is A Deeper Thinker Than KK(K) And Patrick Reusse is a better writer. With her, the Strib reached its nadir.

Kathy’s columns Regurgitating work of others is something Katherine Kersten used to do a lot of although she she has improved somewhat e in recent years. I always assumed that was because she was edited a little more carefully. And by the way, I am not suggesting that she did anything unethical. It’s just that especially in the early years, the typical Kersten column basically consisted of her making some sort of statement which was then supported by a reference to some sort of conservative authority on the issue. I think she has gotten better over the years but she is still someone who takes a position, and then looks for evidence to support it, rather then being someone who looks at evidence and draws a conclusion. If she wants to find Muslims at a school she will search high and low until she locates them, and when she does, she will stop right there.
