MNspeak goes dark… temporarily
Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 9:33 am
MNspeak, the popular Twin Cities link aggregator/placeblog, is down today, apparently after its owner failed to renew the domain name. Owned by The Rake’s Tom Bartel, the site’s registration shows an April 22 expiration date for MNspeak.com.
Update: Reached by phone, Bartel said he wasn’t aware of the problem and that the domain name should’ve been renewed. “MNspeak’s down? That’s news to me,” he said. “It’s screwup; it’ll be fixed.”
Update 10:20: It’s up and running again.

75 days There is apparently a 75 day wait period for those hoping to purchase the domain.

oops They should be able to get the domain back. There’s usually a 40 day window after expiration where the previous owner has rights to renew before anyone else. See here: http://www.mikeindus…
But, this is kind of comical and a bit telling about the state of Mnspeak. Site has stayed relatively static for quite some time, and the general impression I get about how it’s run is that whoever is pulling the wires, they’re not quite getting it.

good thing for the grace period I had a bit of a misunderstanding with my registrar earlier this year and was super thankful for the grace period. But I don’t have nearly the eyeballs and I think it went mostly unnoticed.
But yeah, definitely speaks to the state of mnspeak behind the scenes.
I bet productivity around the TC has gone up today.

This is news? Yup, definitely speaks to the state of mnspeak behind the scenes and the fact that, (can you believe it?) I have a credit card with an expiration date. I got an email this morning that said they’d tried to renew the registration and, lo and behold, the behind the scenes credit card they had on file had expired. Well, behind the scenes, I got right on that and logged on and updated the file, replacing the behind the scenes 2007 with a behind the scenes 2010, and by golly, mnspeak is back. I do, though, want to thank ericam for calling attention to our behind the scenes shortcomings.

And thanks to Paul… for alerting you to the fact that the site was down! Thanks Paul, we’re happy to have MnSpeak back.

I was just… …agreeing with Justin. And I was wrong.
But if you want me to go into other opinions on the state of mnspeak, I can. Or I can talk about how, much as I don’t want to, I really like The Rake. Or you can accuse me of libel again. Etc.
