Coleman enlists 35W bridge tragedy in his campaign against Franken

Sen. Norm Coleman has a new weapon in his arsenal and it is intended for his anticipated opponent, Al Franken. The incumbent senator has recently suggested that if Franken had been in the U.S. Senate when the 35W bridge collapsed, Minnesota would not have received the same level of federal assistance due to Franken’s past partisanship. Besides a blatant politicization of a tragedy, Coleman’s remarks seem ultimately more damning of his Senate colleagues than of Franken.

Minnesota Publius has identified three instances in which Coleman made the argument. In a video posted by Minnesota Publius from CD 1 Republican Convention, Coleman says Minnesota “would not have gotten that money and that kind of support that quick. Wouldn’t happen.”

Coleman repeated the claim during his appearance on MPR’s “Meet the Candidate” series. Coleman suggested Senate colleagues would have asked, “Why should I accommodate him?”

“Why should I accommodate him?” Here’s a better question: which one of Norm’s colleagues would consider supporting a request for funding to repair the bridge to be accommodating Franken, rather than accommodating the people of Minnesota who have to deal with the aftermath of the collapse every day?

Just how bad do things have to get before Norm’s colleagues are willing to overlook Franken’s past and actually govern? If we had a flu outbreak, how long would Norm’s colleagues stand in the way? How many Minnesotans would have to die before his fellow Republicans were convinced to accommodate Franken?

I get the feeling that Norm! 08 didn’t think this one through before rolling it out to the public.

That A Former Pro-Wrestler once beat little Normie Coleman in a statewide election is not surprising, is it? As Bush’s lickspittle, he’s facing an uphill climb to retain his seat.
