Did God send Hurricane Katrina to ravage New Orleans because a gay pride event was planned there? That’s the statement that the Rev. John Hagee repeated on the Dennis Prager show Wednesday. Hagee is the preacher Sen. John McCain sought out for endorsement, and when he got it on Sunday, McCain said, “I’m glad to have his endorsement.”

The mainstream media has paid little attention to Hagee and his relationship with McCain. That attention is microscopic compared to the media frenzy over statements by Sen. Barack Obama’s pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Prager asked Hagee about statements he made to National Public Radio in 2006. Here’s the partial transcript:

PRAGER: Right, but in the case, did NPR get, is this quote correct though that in the case of New Orleans you do feel it was sin?

HAGEE: In the case of New Orleans, their plan to have that homosexual rally was sin. But it never happened. The rally never happened.

PRAGER: No, I understand.

HAGEE: It was scheduled that Monday.

PRAGER: No, I’m only trying to understand that in the case of New Orleans, you do feel that God’s hand was in it because of a sinful city?

HAGEE: That it was a city that was planning a sinful conduct, yes.

McCain, who is touring New Orleans this week, was asked by reporters how he feels about Hagee’s statements. McCain responded, “It’s nonsense, it’s nonsense, it’s nonsense, it’s nonsense, it’s nonsense. I don’t have anything additional to say. It’s nonsense, it’s nonsense, it’s nonsense, I don’t have anything more to say. … it’s nonsense. I reject that categorically.”
