Good news for the Christian right: The wit and wisdom of E.J. Dionne Jr.
Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Eric Black of MinnPost notes that the blind man’s political trend spotter, E.J. Dionne Jr., was in town recently to promote Souled Out, his new book heralding the end of the religious right as a signal force in American politics. Black quotes Dionne’s pronouncement that Americans have “grown tired of a religious style of politics that was dogmatic, partisan and reflected a spirit too certain of itself and far too insistent of the depravity of its political adversaries.”
This is the same E.J. Dionne Jr. who, in a fit of clairvoyance that seized him a couple of years before George W. Bush became president, published a book called They Only Look Dead: Why Progressives Will Dominate the Next Political Era — now available at deeply discounted prices.

Steve Perry must be God! Down with other progressive voices! So I guess Steve Perry’s point is that we just should stop advancing the idea that things can, or will change. Nope, better stop hoping. I mean, things will never be perfect, but they sure as hell have a real possibility of getting better.
As for Dionne suggesting that “progressives will dominate” just before the Bush era. I mean, the last eight years was the product of what – the flip of a coin at the U. S. Supreme court? And I seem to remember something about September 11th in there, which nobody expected, and would have underscored our less progressive tendencies no matter who was President.
But sure, throw one of the more thoughtful and articulate progressive voices under the bus. Hope it makes you feel good.
