WCCO gay story pairing raises eyebrows

A pair of headlines Thursday morning at the WCCO website made for a stark contrast in the television station’s treatment of LGBT-related stories. On one side, “Twin Cities to Celebrate 37th Gay Pride Fest” and on the other, “Undercover Cops Crack Down on Gay Cruising.”

“Gay cruising” is often a phenomena among men who are closeted and not likely to identify as gay — and not likely to attend this weekend’s Pride activities. In fact, except for the title, the cruising story never mentions the word “gay.” WCCO’s juxtaposition creates an inaccurate impression.

I felt that was a little off when I saw it.

Also wonder what the story is going to do for safety around the park.

Remember what Jesse Ventura’s chief of staff said when he got busted looking for action at the YMCA. The problem is not that gays like to have off in locker rooms and in the bushes, noooo. The problem is that society hasn’t become enlightened enough to acknowledge that’s a natural part of being gay.

It’s how they roll; get used to it.

Ask your kids; if they attend public school, they’ve been thoroughly educated and can tell you all about it.

Hello…

We’d like to apologize to anyone who may have been offended by the way these two unrelated stories were juxtaposed on our web site this morning. It was an inadvertent mistake and we quickly moved the stories apart. We’re human and we could have done a better job of ensuring that didn’t happen in the first place. We promise to work harder to prevent things like this in the future.

We also believe we have a solid record of offering an appropriate blend of coverage of all communities, including the gay community – and not just at festival time. We strive to provide responsible coverage on critical issues, including same-sex marriage, equity in workers’ benefits and the relationship between LGBT people and religious groups. We’re also very fortunate to have several gay colleagues in positions of influence throughout our newsroom. They help us better report on all kinds of issues as accurately and effectively as we can.

I’d personally welcome any further questions or feedback on this or any of our coverage at the e-mail address below.

Sincerely,

John Daenzer

Good response, John. I appreciate both MnIndy for raising the issue and the station addressing the concern here.
