X = 10 I may have seen the same tag. I took "Sur X 3" to mean Surenos 13 (X standing for 10). I don't think Gary Schiff is that far off. Just about every garage on my block was tagged last summer, mine included. All had Surenos 13 is some form or another.

I live in the Central neighborhood and last week I spotted 3 young kids walking down my alley about 6 p.m. on a weeknight. One was holding a spray can. I didn't see anyone in the act and knew they would be long gone if the cops bothered to show up. I see these same kids get on the school bus every morning. They are in grade school and middle school. I've got my digital camera ready to go in case I spot them in the alley again.

While 95 percent of the graffiti in Phillips, Powderhorn and Central may be gang related, it is being done by very young kids who may not be gang bangers--at least not yet. Tagging is a way for the young wanna-bes to begin a gangster life. You're not going to catch a 20-something gang member tagging garages. That's why, I think, most of the graffiti is very crude and full of misspellings. One of the tags on my garage was by "Baby Boy."
