Minneapolis police officers can now be found patrolling the downtown area on three-wheeled electric gizmos called T3s, donated by maker T3 Motion. The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) recently introduced a fleet of six of the battery-powered zero-emission vehicles. MPD officials claim the high-tech machines help cops get around faster than they would on foot, improving their emergency response time. T3s, a close competitor of the two-wheeled Segway, are currently being tested in other cities, as well.
The black-and-white lightweight mobiles, which are rigged with flashing lights and a siren (and are marked “Police”), can reach speeds of up to 25 miles per hour. At the same time, the sporty T3s reportedly allow for easy navigation around corners and through doorways. Officers ride them standing upright on a raised platform, giving them the added benefit of height, helping them “maneuver through crowds, patrol skyways and be seen more readily,” a prepared statement reads.
Cost: $6,188 (not including battery pack and charger), according to company information upon the vehicle’s release.
