So long, Humphrey and Lindbergh! C’mere, Terminals 1 and 2, you little stinkers!

The Twin Cities’ twin airport terminals, currently named for aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh and Vice President Hubert Humphrey, will be re-christened Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 if a plan approved today by a Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) committee goes forward. That — and the $2.2 million new signs would cost — has inspired online mockery aplenty.
Greg at MetBlogs notes that by the MAC’s own estimates, only 20,000 of the 34 million people who use the airport annually suffer from Humphrey/Lindbergh confusion — making the project cost $110 per lost soul. He suggests a simple change: make each airline ticket state which terminal the plane is using.
On Twitter, the move called into question the very identities of the Twin Cities themselves …
… and raised a question: Has the MAC considered selling naming rights, a la our newest stadiums?
What other Minnesota pairs could be subjected to renaming-by-the-numbers? Or other things named for Minnesota greats where a single digit would do?

The easiest “1″ of all. Naming the Mississippi River, River 1. The St. Croix and Minnesota can battle it out for number 2.

Does the Metropolitan Airports Commission still send a huge contingent to the Airport Operators Council International “Legislative Conference” every January–in Hawaii? The MAC likes to claim it’s self-sustaining, but it’s you and I and the rest of the travelers who are paying the bill in higher fees–including their mid-January Hawaiian vacation.

They could save an awful lot of money by just calling them “Lindbergh Terminal 1″ and “Humphrey Terminal 2.” Wouldn’t take more than a gallon or two of paint to just add the numerals on the signs, and it wouldn’t take much to clearly state one or the other on customers’ tickets.

Dave Porter, I was thinking the same thing! Chuck Lindbergh, no idea but I’d like to know. Christopher, excellent application!
Blogger Stephen Silver saw this and had some pretty good alternate names:
I don’t blame them for taking off the name of Lindbergh, an open Nazi sympathizer- although my house happens to be on Lindbergh Ave.- but why punish Humphrey? Not good times for HHH, especially with the other thing named after him, the Metrodome, possibly coming down soon as well. I’d be happy if, once he’s dead, they name the Lindbergh terminal after Minnesota’s other vice president, Mondale. Or Paul Wellstone. Or make them the Puckett and Hrbek terminals. Or Dylan and Prince. Or Mould and Westerberg.

What makes them think renaming them will clear up any confusion?

How about calling them the Mauer and Morneau Terminals? This would really screw things up, but it would have the benefit of reducing airport noise…

If they would make the north east runway run more east west then they could build one or two more wings on TERMINAL 1 in that area. Which would allow more planes at that terminal. They could then either get rid of TERMINAL 2 or use it for storage of their overpaid egos.

I think in a few years I will take my family to Walt Disney World and go to Park 1, Park 2, and Park 4. They are not that excited to visit Park 3. Any suggestions how to change their minds?
