Loch Ness Monster spotted on Minneapolis’ Lake Harriet

picture-8The Loch Ness Monster — or a likeness thereof — has been spotted on Minneapolis’ Lake Harriet. While some speculation exists, at least by a guy interviewed by KARE-11, that the creature is part of a millfoil-abatement plan, my guess from looking at the website LakeCreature.com is that it’s art. (It’s got a Twitter account, too.) The work has a striking resemblance to that of artist Cameron Gainer, whose floating sculptures — entitled _[ — have showed up in Brooklyn, Key West, and other locales. Gainer, formerly based in New York, now calls Minneapolis home; he’s engaged to Walker Art Center director Olga Viso. Next week we’ll see if I’m right: the project’s site says it’ll officially reveal details on Thursday.

Maybe we should commission some 10,000 of these and put them in every lake we have. With that size order perhaps we could get some animatronic ones for special lakes like Superior. We could add this to our state bird the loon and name the tick our state insect and immediately be nick-named the Loon and Tick state. Ahhh Minnesota in the Summer… Weather sure is nice today…
