Activist groups from across the country are gearing up to demonstrate at the upcoming Republican and Democratic national conventions. Michigan Messenger, Minnesota Monitor’s sister site, reports that preparations are under way for training sessions organized by Unconventional Michigan.

Grand Rapids-based ACTIVATE is also preparing to protest. “The resistance to the conventions grows out of our antiwar work over the past two years and our understanding that electoral politics will not bring about the systemic changes needed to prevent future wars and dismantle the systems of oppression (racism, patriarchy, capitalism) that keep us in chains,” a statement on the group’s Web site explains.

While it will remain unclear how many out-of-state activists will actually make the journey to St. Paul or Denver, ACTIVATE is focusing primarily on the RNC, due to proximity.
