The “Tea Party” movement began as a backlash against government spending and the $787 billion federal stimulus package. While the movement has since lost steam, the anti-tax protesters have recently been fomenting opposition to the overhaul of the country’s beleaguered health-care system being hashed out in Washington.

U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison has been a staunch supporter of significant health care reform. With more than 40-million residents currently lacking insurance, there’s little question that the current scheme isn’t working.

But the Tea Partiers are convinced that the specter of greater government involvement in the health-care system will do little to help those currently lacking insurance and — just maybe — spell the end of freedom for all other hard-working Americans. Roughly a dozen such folks showed up at Ellison’s Minneapolis office yesterday to voice their opposition to the health care system overhaul. MnIndy tagged along with a video camera:

Wow. Glenn Beck’s radio show isn’t “mainstream” because you need cable to watch his TV show? You can get $6/month health insurance? And that guy at the end wants to stop “sociaized” medicine?

Nut job Republi-thugs. Single payer will be here before the end of the year and Mr. Ellison is one of those that we can all thank for finally bringing the US up to the standards of the rest of the world.

That sign about seniors going extinct refers to the deathers: people who believe the insurance reform bill (there are still several, but try telling them that) includes provisions for the involuntary euthanasia of elderly people. This is being spread by the conservative media and we need to beat this back. Since the birthers have turned out to be a great club for beating Republicans, maybe we can use the deathers for some follow up wacks.

Yes! You can get health coverage for $6/month! You can get health coverage from the state and it goes according to your income! In fact, many don’t pay anything at all. My “black” girlfriend just received a “free” heart valve but not without a complimentary breast reduction for free!

Yes! We need reform! But not rushed through like the ARRA, and as Conyers said “you need a lawyer to understand what is in that bill”.

Read the BILL and tell me there is not at least 20 things that don’t raise the hairs on your arms! Have you read the bill? Don’t support it unless you have read it!

I don’t have health coverage and I pay for my visits and I pay for my sons insulin/supplies and our families doctors visits! I want the middle man out! Why do we have to “pay for protection”! Government Mafia thugs! Just like the Federal Reserve inserts itself between me and my money (yours too) we need to ask ourselves why? Why are these individual PRIVATE and NOW GVT organizations inserting themselves between us and our basic needs and rights?

Also, why is Ellison’s office in a NON PROFIT orgs building?

It is about truth and transparency! No one likes to be lied to…

Ellison is the most progressive democrat! I have lived with a Palestinian family for 2 years and I have hispanic, black friends and family. I would say that Keith is always raising racial tension especially with the way he packaged his town hall meeting. It is the same for whites as it is for blacks within the same income brackets! Yes their are weak minded individuals that are racist but they are on both sides and they are of ALL races! Blacks, Muslims (especially), and others have their own pockets of weak minded individuals!

Be careful not to get sucked up into any hype and don’t be force fed info by propaganda. Stop being lazy and READ THE BILL!

How many of the 40,000,000 million are going to holistic doctors and can’t get coverage because insurance will not cover holistic medicine. Which is most cancer patients and health buffs!

Come on now!

@ZNOFOB To answer your question: YES

These tea baggers make me sick. There is absolutely nothing to be gained from attempting a rational debate with them. Just look at the little girl: its 2009 and her parents felt it appropriate to stick an afro wig on her and drag her down to a protest at the Urban League! What else is that but racist? After 40+ years of deliberate GOP race-baiting, this is where its at.

Alexandra Pelosi got to the heart of it in her documentary Right America: Feeling Wronged. They respond only to pathos and only when it comes from the Same, never from the Other. The reality of a non-WASP being elected president reduced one of them to a blubbering, weeping mess. You can’t reason with a person who is that emotionally invested in what they perversely perceive as a privileged position.

Liberals are culpable for one aspect of this disgrace. When the corporations reacted to feminism and the civil rights movement by instituting a culture of political correctness, liberals stood on the sidelines while conservatives floundered and carped. The ensuing cultural reaction of political incorrectness resulted and with it came a very dangerous belief that “words don’t matter” and frankly I am unable to think of a better environment for Orwellian tactics.

Single out Congressman Ellison because he has been championing health care reform, so not too much doubt on his position or his intended vote.

Seniors ‘Extinct after Obama Care?’

That’s a funny Knock-Knock (nobody home) joke.

Seniors are doing pretty well with Medicare, and Health Care Reform should bring better health care options to the rest of the population, like seniors have with Medicare.

Yeah but Obama and Elison want to make them Govenment run programs! Everybody knows that the Government can’t run things.

Okay I am being sarcastic, but how much would you want to bet the old folk tea baggers don’t understand that they are enrolled in Government run health programs. I am positive they don’t know what Tea Bagging actual is.

The tea baggers are sponsored by corporate lobbyists to kill healthcare. The lies they spread and the real people at these town hall meetisng being gullable to believe them all is shameful. The lobby groups are like predators preying on the less than savvy and are of the lowest form of life. Many of you do have healthcare with no issues. Millions of us have no healthcare with jobs losses, income losses, and those simply poor. Many more have been denied claims so rationing care is real and happening presently. Premiums continue to climb with less care received in return. Employers large and small need this burden taken off their shoulders. Everyone fears the government involvement yet we should be fearing the insurers profiting ino the trillins of dollars. Medicare has worked well and is a socialized form of healthcare. What is wrong with offering this exact care package to all who want it or need it? What is wrong with pushing the overbearing profit companies out of the game and have a system that does not profit? Single payer healthcare is the only care system that does not evolve around the profit margins. I find it appalling the tactics being used such as the Florida Senator telling the elderly that the Government wants to kill them. It is outrageous that politics must resort to using fear right out of Karl Roves play books!

Sue,

The local tea parties do not get ANY money from ANY of the national groups!

No one is saying that the health care system does not need reform.

What we are saying is this bill sucks! There are some things in this bill that will make your skin crawl.

Have your read it? I would be interested in hearing from you if you have read it.

I have at least 20 questions for you.

It is irresponsible to support a bill you have not read! So read it and tell me what you think!

The people who use the terms “tea baggers” and “tea bagging” describe themselves well.

@ SamInMpls Are you really that dense? How do you possibly manage your own checkbook? It would be CHEAPER for the gov’t to buy all those people insurance than what they are proposing! They could purchase an excellent program that is better than whats being offered, for $18K per year per family and still leave those of us who worked and earned our healthcare ALONE! I’m sick and tired of the BS this gov’t is pulling to take control of everything. THAT IS NOT WHAT GOV’T IS FOR! WAKE THE F* UP and get a grip on reality! Thanks Obama, for screwing up my healthcare and making it HARDER for me to afford on disability pay, while I pay taxes to help some SCHMUCK get his! YOU’RE KILLING OUR COUNTRY!!!!!!!!!!

@sueinmn “The tea baggers are sponsored by corporate lobbyists to kill healthcare”

Sue, you’re either completly under the spell of Obama and too lazy to do your own research or you’re a liar. Since you won’t admit to being lazy, that makes you a liar. Corporate has nothing to do with us. The truly sad thing is you haven’t researched a damn thing yourself. All you do is spread Obama lies by repeating it rather than finding out the truth. Do your own research! Don’t be surprised when you find out your free health care is NOT FREE! Unless you are one of those lazy people who prefer to sit on welfare and food stamps, then yeah, you will get it free.
We don’t mind helping people who need it. What we DO mind are lazy people are make a career out of living off other people. I had decent medical coverage until Obama broke the law and instituted socialized medicine. Just wait, you’ll see. According to our Bill of Rights, the gov’t cannot force anyone to buy a good. Getting medical care is a good, something you pay for to get something in return. It’s spelled out quite nicely. He can’t do it! Even the backroom deals he made were illegal because the federal gov’t cannot offer 1 state more than another state. The man is a CON MAN who is doing for himself and his so called friends that give him money. It’s MONEY that motivates Obama, not people!
