As usual, Mitch Berg mangles the facts Mondale didn't try to "boost" Springsteen's song at all. He claimed Springsteen had endorsed him when he hadn't actually endorsed him but just supported his candidacy. It had nothing to do with stealing musicians' songs, as Mitch imagines. Mondale's erroneous claim was in response to the flap over Reagan trying to appropriate Springsteen's song for his campaign. Like so many other chickenhawk Republicans, Reagan (or his handlers) misinterpreted the song to be a flag-waving anthem in support of their side, rather than the anthem for disillusioned Vietnam vets returning from the war whom Springsteen wrote it for.

More recently, when George Bush revealed in 2005 that fellow Texan Alejandro Escovedo's "Castanets" was on his iPod, Alejandro quit playing the song live in protest.

Reagan and Springsteen. McCain and Mellencamp. Bush and Escovedo. It's almost as nauseating as when Norm "Master of War" Coleman quotes Bob Dylan.
