Bachmann gets props from Palin, Politico

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann got a shout-out from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Facebook Friday, possibly the first sign of synergy between the two that fans and critics alike have long seen coming. Politico sees a passing of the torch, with Bachmann taking over from Palin a prestige position as a Republican who Democrats most want to unseat.

On her Facebook page, Palin praised Bachmann for revealing the ”Orwellian” hazards of health care reform, linking to the video of a floor speech in which Bachmann quotes Palin’s favorite rightwing health hawk, Betsey McCaughey:

Rep. Michele Bachmann highlighted the Orwellian thinking of the president’s health care advisor, Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the brother of the White House chief of staff, in a floor speech to the House of Representatives. I commend her for being a voice for the most precious members of our society, our children and our seniors.

Like Palin, Bachmann, Politico observes, is a

conservative lightning rod who speaks with an upper-Midwestern accent, is the mother of a large family, and touts a stridently socially conservative agenda that Democrats regard as outright right wing.

(The reason Bachmann and Palin share a regional accent: A government-relief program in the 1930s populated Palin’s home region in Alaska’s Mat-Su Valley with Minnesotans.)

Both women temper their attacks on heath care reform with concern for children with particular disabilities. With her bill to designate September “National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month,” Bachmann is plowing ground much as Palin did to popular acclaim after the birth last year of her son Trig, who has Down syndrome.

I’d like to ask that you reconsider your use of the word “afflictions.” Down syndrome is a disability. Millions of people live with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities and don’t feel they are “afflicted,” except perhaps by societal prejudice. Hydrocephalus is a medical condition. If you want to use one term to refer to both, “disability” is probably your best choice.

Beth Wright, thanks for your comment. I was indeed looking for the broadest term that would encompass both. I’ll go with disability, as you suggest.

I find it weird that Mrs. Palin and Mrs. Bachmann both exploit children health challenges for political gain. Neither politician supports health care reform that would ensure more children receive better medical attention.

Talking about Downs Syndrome, talking about hydrocephalus … while blocking needed health care reform …..

I find that to be an irreconcilable conflict, the hypocrisy of it aside.

The two crazies have spoken. I am waiting for one of them to claim they are Michael Jackson’s children’s mother.

Check Bachmann’s voting record on funding research for conditions such as hydrocephalus. She has voted against federal research funds for hydrocephalus at every opportunity since she was elected in 2006. People with Hydrocephalus don’t need a special month they need research and medical funding.

You’ll find Bachmann’s hypocritical voting record on hydrocephalus research here:

Thanks Karl. For the record, I did already have a link to your post in this post, so readers could dig into Bachmann’s record on hydrocephalus, at the words “National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month.”

I’ve been a lifelong GOPer but I’ve recently switched my registration because of the radical positions of ideologues like Palin and Bachmann, two nauseating politicians that distort facts and outright lie to pursue an agenda that irrevocably our United States. I don’t like everything Obama is doing and I think he ought to slow down a bit on some of his reforms. But hell, I’m just sick of the rage that those two and others like them have been generating. It’s bad for our country, worse than anything the President could ever do.

I’m no Ivy League elitist or RINO, I’m a factory worker right here in the Twin Cities that believes in responsible government and protestant values, and it’s independents like me that are fleeing the GOP. The folks in charge of the party have got to realize that things have changed.

Sarah Palin for the love of God – quit blogging all day and pick up a book and educate yourself.
Michelle – you try educating yourself as well. I am so glad the Republicans are stuck with you two as their voice.
