Its not just the Bible, or religion. Aristotle and Plato both proclaimed usury to be anti-social.

However, its the religious leaders - the moral gatekeeprs - who should be ashamed of themselves.

As the article above alludes to, all three major religions banned usury... until their greed got the better of them. Some popes used to even call it "heresy."

Usury originally referred to lending with ANY increase or interest - not just "unreasonable" interest. The concept being that it is immoral to take advantage of someone in need. You don't need organized religion to understand and accept morality. Well, maybe if you're stupid, you do. I digress.

Its not that complicated. Greedy religious leaders let all of society slide into this mess over many, many decades. They could have stopped it, but they put the fallacious "need" for material possessions before spiritual afterlife.

And, remember, its just as immoral to borrow with interest, as it is to lend with interest.

"Thou shall not lend upon usury to thy brother." Deuteronomy 23:19

The cause is good BUT the Bible does not quote law nor is it law! Are we allowing the religious right to control as they are apparently our of control? I definstely support the cause of decreasing rates but I cannot support this being done in the name of the Bible.

Why should the rate be allowed to even be 10%? It really should be only about 5%. Then it would be a closer match to the mortgage rates - and the big banks are making a killing on the mortgages. So they muct be making an even bigger killing on the credit cards.
