The Southern Poverty Law Center released a report on Wednesday indicating a significant rise in militia activity across the United States (pdf). It also addresses political and media figureheads — including Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann — who are amplifying anti-government sentiments.
“Almost 10 years after it seemed to disappear from American life, there are unmistakable signs of a revival of what in the 1990s was commonly called the militia movement,” the report’s authors write. “From Idaho to New Jersey and Michigan to Florida, men in khaki and camouflage are back in the woods, gathering to practice the paramilitary skills they believe will be needed to fend off the socialistic troops of the ‘New World Order.’”
The SPLC interviewed a number of government officials who are tracking militia activity and noted a stark increase in recent months. The report also says that politicians and mainstream media personalities are adding fuel to the fire of anti-government sentiment:
A remarkable aspect of the current antigovernment movement is the extent to which it has gained support from elected officials and mainstream media outlets. Lawmakers complaining about the intrusiveness of the federal government have introduced 10th Amendment resolutions (reasserting that those powers not granted to the federal government remain with the states) in about three dozen states. In Texas, Gov. Rick Perry raised the prospect of secession several months after Obama’s inauguration — a notion first brought up there in the ’90s by the militia-like Republic of Texas. U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) said she feared that the president was planning “reeducation camps for young people,” while U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.), evoking memories of the discredited communist-hunter Sen. Joseph McCarthy, warned of 17 “socialists” in Congress. Fox News host Glenn Beck, who has called Obama a fascist, a Nazi and a Marxist, even re-floated militia conspiracy theories of the 1990s alleging a secret network of government-run concentration camps.

At what point does Michele Bachman, by spreading falsehoods and fomenting anger against the elected representatives of the citizens of the United States, become the “domestic enemy” she took an oath to defend the country against?

“A remarkable aspect of the current antigovernment movement is the extent to which it has gained support from elected officials …” (Southern Poverty Law Center report)
I have shared that concern with respect to Rep. Bachmann for some time now — a concern that has become more urgent in view of our growing economic uncertainty.
History has shown that freedom is most jeopardized in times of economic uncertainty and social upheaval, when people search for scapegoats and are willing to subjugate their civil liberties in favor of submission to an authoritarian leader.
The warning signs are all around us. We see it with the Teabaggers, the Birthers, and the hooliganism at town hall meetings dealing with President Obama’s health care proposals.
In the information age, public rhetoric like Bachmann’s is dangerous when legitimized by individuals entrusted with the power of high public office.
Bachmann’s political position amplifies her voice and incites a large and growing national audience.
Her demagoguery, fear-mongering, and incendiary rhetoric energizes and mobilizes political extremists, some of whom may lack the clarity of judgment and self-restraint on which we rely for a civil society and a nation of laws.

My concern is more along the lines of an out of control government overbearing its will upon we the people, who are more or less marginalized by the hegelian dialectic, which nobody here apparently wants to discuss. Bachmann is not dangerous. Our “leaders” are.
So, really, is the Constitution the law of the land or not?
THAT is what it really boils down to.

“Dictate opinions”? And they’re commies… how? I assume it’s because their research doesn’t confirm your worldview.

ZNOFOB said “Bachmann is not dangerous. Our “leaders” are.”
At least he acknowledges that Bachmann isn’t a leader.

Western countries have a long history of hypocrisy in the use of force. Much of what politicians and generals call terrorism is actually counterterrorism, a reaction to military terrorism. Military terrorism has killed millions more civilans than non-state terrorism. When Rome invaded the Iberian penninsula they forced the “natives” to work in their own mines and send this back to Rome. To enslaved minds the Roman soldier was an object of fear and dread or terror. But who had introduced this form of terror to this area ? Rome. What options did Rome leave the natives to rid themselves of the Roman presence ? Only one, force. Lacking training and an army the natives attacked Roman columns which Roman soldiers no doubt considered terrorism. During Englands colonization period they considered force used by themselves benevolence, counterforce used by the natives they called terrorism. The United States politicians, media, and generals, routinely call attacks by what are irregular soldiers (guerrilla patriots) upon uniformed western soldiers who have invaded their countries, terrorism. As long as western countries use terrorism they will be attacked by counterterrorism. Non-state terrorism is not something that can be rounded up and formally defeated like a conventional army. Rob.

ZNOFOB,
Why don’t you man up and start commenting using your real name?

Anything coming out of the Southern Poverty Law Center should be taken with a LARGE grain of salt. Many a legitimate group , religious of political , has coming under scathing rebuke by this organization and most of a political motivated nature. The study they are foisting before us when scrutinized is nothing but a collection of web sites , eleven total, that they say represent a threat to or national security . Not one of the web sites has the DHS nor SPLC investigated concerning any real or perceived threat to the government. It all adds up to nothing more than fear mongering.

cold someone please tell me why is it that law abiding ,liberty loving, god fearing, tax paying americans just trying to bring this country back to constitutional order are being critized and demonized. i know many militia members that are some of the most respectful, true patriots that i have ever talked to, and it realy makes me sick to see the reports that link ” militia groups” to right wing, ‘ANTI- GOVERNMENT” TERRORIST. this is insane, mabe everytime we say fbi, atf, dhs, splc or us government we should say ati-constitution group.
