After bashing Barack Obama last week in "Celebs" and the web-only "The One," Ol’ Cranky Bastard morphs back into Mr. Maverick in his latest, "Broken," which begins thus: "Washington’s broken. John McCain knows it. We’re worse off than we were four years ago." Then he gets down to the more serious business of dusting off his own withered claim to political celebrity: "The Original Maverick," proclaims the caption on one shot of McCain.

Can new life be breathed into what suddenly seems a very old nostrum? If it doesn’t get him elected, "Original Maverick" would make a hell of a name for a line of McCain barbecue sauces.
