Hennepin County experiences record foreclosures…again
Thursday, July 31, 2008 at 2:10 pm
For the first six months of this year, Hennepin County’s Civil Unit handled 3,826 foreclosures. That’s a 55 percent increase over the same period last year, when Hennepin County experienced a record number of foreclosures. In fact, in May of this year alone, Hennepin County saw 700 foreclosures, nearly the same number of foreclosures that the Sheriff’s Office handled for the entire year in 2000.
The Minneapolis neighborhoods hardest hit by the foreclosure epidemic this year are Camden (374 foreclosures from January 1 through Jun 30 of this year), Near North (379), Powderhorn (250), and Northeast (153). The city of Minneapolis accounts for 1,586 of the 3,826 foreclosures the Hennepin County Sherriff’s Office has handled this year.
In 2007, Minneapolis was hit with a total of 2,895 foreclosures. In 2006, when the mortgage crisis began rearing its ugly head, the city saw 1,607 foreclosures.
