Bachmann ‘hearing voices’ other than God’s, says top Dem

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann’s talk of stopping health care reform by fasting, praying and wrist-slitting has prompted not only lefty pundits but a top Democratic colleague to question what’s going on between her ears. Jim Oberstar, chairman of the House Transportation Committee, remarked Tuesday: “I don’t think God’s talking to her anymore. I think she’s hearing other voices.”

Bachmann said in 2006 that she was running for Congress on God’s recommendation (video), and last month said she would run for president if she “felt that’s what the Lord was calling me to do.

It wasn’t a one-off gag line for Oberstar, who earlier called Bachmann “a sweet woman” but had this advice for elderly health care reform advocates in Duluth who were planning to visit her: ”Tell her that there are voices other than God that are informing her.” [Via Tom Elko]

It wasn’t immediately clear whether one of those voices is that of Rep. Ron Paul, who has Bachmann’s ear on financial policy and will appear with her at a town hall in her district this month.

Oberstar’s comments are of the sort more commonly heard from cable TV yakkers like Ed Schultz, whose show featured her “psycho talk” two days in a row, and Dan Savage, who linked God-inspired politics to hate rhetoric of the worst sort:

When you have a party that claims to speak for God or says God is on its side, the rhetoric heats up and the anger heats up, because it’s not just a battle about ideas and positions and what’s good for the country and bad for the country. It’s a battle about what God wants and what God doesn’t want. And it’s easier to demagogue about your enemies and to despise them and to dehumanize them in this really personal and vicious way. And the religious right is fomenting this kind of hatred in this country at our peril. I really do think that the Michele Bachmanns of the world and the Glenn Becks of the world are actively and consciously, or subconsciously, trying to get — I’m just going to say it — trying to get the president killed. This kind of rhetoric — this paranoid style on the religious right, from Birchers to birthers — doesn’t usually end well. And somebody’s got to put the brakes on it. Unfortunately in the Republican Party, there’s no adults left in the room. There are only the Michele Bachmanns and the Glenn Becks and the Rush Limbaughs running the show.

Here’s MSNBC video of Savage (via City Pages) and Schultz (via our sister site the Colorado Independent):

What’s worrying is that while very little such violent talk results in anything happening, terrorist acts are normally preceded by such rhetoric.People don’t suddenly move from open-minded, dialogue-seeking positions to wanting to kill somebody. They need to believe they’re in some overarching struggle between good and evil, and their targets are evil. Bachmann is using just that dichotomy.

The irrationality of the right wing (religious right; Evangelicals; Rethuglican Party, whatever moniker suits them best), is beyond reasonable comprehension. It takes a seriously warped, delusional, and ultra-conspiratorial mind to come up with the worry that the President talking to school children about the value of education, is an attempt to indoctrinate them to socialism. You can’t make this stuff up!!!

They’re trying to drag us into their alternate universe. It’s total lunacy.

It is amazing to me that these Right Wing Evangelicals ignore the teaching of Christ. Ask yourself, would he support abandoning the poor and the sick in favor of the rich and the mighty? No way Jesus would ever be an uncaring, selfish Republican.

There is something scary about the loose, irresponsible talk of the Far Right “leaders” [sic] such as Beck, Bachmann, Limbaugh, Palin and their radical friends and allies in the “birthers”, the NRA and the ultra fundies. Some of this talk borders on mentally unstable what with the paranoia, conspiricies, vivid invocations of God’s personal interest in individuals of the right political persuasion. Some of it is not too far from hearing voices that are not there. All of this is sensational enough that the press is magnifying the impact of a relatively small number of people. In this frenzied climate, I am afraid that one of these unstable will take violent action. There are no calming, adult voices in the Republican Party.

[continued] This reminds me of the period when a whole series of planes were hijacked to Cuba by unstable people. The Press paid inordinate attention to the hijackings by feeding their need for attention and to give meaning to otherwise unimpressive people. I believe that the Press under pressure or by agreement with security officials, agreed to report the hijacking news more matter of factly. As soon as the attention given died down the hijackings started to decline and eventually stopped. Similarly, the OK City bombing and Waco was “stoked” ahead of time. If the leaders above can’t stop stoking the fires of hatred and irresponsiblity, the possibly the press can tone things down a bit before something quite tragic and devastating happens.

Can I say this more succinctly? God told me to pass along a message to Michelle to tone down her messaging. If doesn’t, He will know. You can tell her that too. God wants me “to say to you to tone it down”.

I live in Bachmann’s district and never could figure out how she got re-elected…until I logged onto the St. Cloud Times dot com. Holy cow. There are a treasure chest of right wingers up here who sound like they’re one step from chucking their SS cards and forming a new community in the woods. And they defend Ms. Bachmann to their dying breath with variations of the theme: “She voted against the stimulus bill, even when George Bush was in office, and she keeps voting against stimulus bills.” They don’t seem to care that she’s a religious zealot who barely hides her bigotry. They don’t seem to understand that the only people she truly represents are Evangelical fanatics.

Nothing good happens when religion and politics get mixed as thoroughly as they are in Ms. Bachmann’s mind. Please, District 6, wake up and realize that Ms. Bachmann is not the pretty, friendly soccer mom she plays on TV. This woman is dangerously unbalanced. GOP, please put someone sane in the next election. Bachmann is an embarassment to our whole state.

This is the illrational 30%. They vote against their own interests. It is unbelievable. The worst health, the most expensive, and the shortest life span is in the south. Yet they are solidly against health care. Each and every person is entitled (yes I said entitled)to reasonably priced health care. You talk about death panels, we already have them. It’s the insurance companies who deceide what proceedures you may or may not receive. We need some form of government to keep all of us safe from lots of things including unscrupulous people.

That video “montage” was a joke. In no way shape or form can you compare using the word assassinate in an answer to what is being said by Michele Bachmann and Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. They are actively inciting the people of this country to believe so many paranoid lies that in makes my blood boil. From Obama “brain washing” our kids with a school address about getting good grades, to fostering ideas that our current administration would not leave office when there time is up is so totally appalling and reprehensible. And to top it off, these things are being propagated not only by radio commentators, but elected official. Do these people have no shame??
I realize that truth in politics has always been tentative, but this is pushing envelope even by those standards.

There is one explanation for all the paranoid accusations coming from the Republican Party and their followers. Freud labeled it “projection.” Because these are the very tactics they use, they assume their opponent is equally vile. Because they would use the occasion of talking to school children to indoctrinate them toward a certain political philosophy, they assume the other side would, too. Because they supported policies that actually severely limited, if not terminated, our civil rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights then, surely, a public option for health insurance must be an under-handed scheme to garner more power for the government over the individual. When “Christian” leaders decry homosexuals as being perverts who are closet pedophiles wanting to harm your children, why is anyone surprised when those who rail in this way are revealed to be child pornographers/molesters themselves? It’s projection, folks…pure and simple.

The republican party has become a disgrace. While years ago, the republican party generally represented what is now called “libertarianism,” (i.e. restrained government, support of individual rights, etc.), it has now become the party of the uneducated, intemperate, and unaware. People like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, and Michelle Bachmann don’t really represent ANY kind of coherent political philosophy. They merely pander to the constituency comprised of the uneducated, intemperate, and unaware. I’m not suggesting that all republicans are out of their minds. But I am most certainly suggesting that the vast majority of republicans are uneducated, intemperate, and unaware and that more educated, tolerant, thoughtful people drawn to the ideas of individual liberty and restrained government no longer have a home in the republican party.
As for Mr. Paul, he cannot be taken seriously. While calling himself a libertarian, he is anti-choice. That, alone, means he makes no sense and can’t be trusted. If you’re for “smaller government,” then you can’t be advocating for government to be involved in such personal decisions as pregnancy, drug use, religion, and what you like to do in bed. We’ve always had our share of morons in America–every country does– but now the morons have their own political party: the republicans.

COME ON back-man woman stops that stupid action. I think what bothers me most is the assumption that all Christians are right-wingers. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. They have not only tried to control the government, but have also assigned themselves the “speakers” for all Christians. As a Christian myself, I firmly believe in the separation of church and state. Not only because I believe that history bares the importance of such, but because I also think it is biblical. For anyone to claim Christianity in one breath and then deny their neighbors something as important as health care, or exhibit the clear and obvious bigotry, or advocate violence is not only inconsistent, but in my mind flirts with heresy.

Comment posted September 3, 2009 @ 7:08 pm

The Jesus of the Bible healed lepers, the sick, everyone who sought his care–he did not require insurance, nor did he advocate war, torture, killing. Ancient Christianity died when the Emperor Constantine established the Christian Church by calling the Council of bishops to meet in Nicea, and their ordering the bishop of Rome to be the “first among equals” (he was not a pope until the fifth century). The Republicans of today are as far from the teaching of Jesus as is a prostitute from a virgin. Bachmann claims, according to this article: “in 2006 that she was running for Congress on God’s recommendation … and last month said she would run for president if she “felt that’s what the Lord was calling me to do.” Jesus told people to avoid politics (“render on to Cesar”) and not promote assassinations. Bachmann is as much of a woman and a representative of the people of her district as I am a cat.

What can be said about someone who hears voices telling them what to do? This is no longer a disqualification for political dialogue. Neither is ignorance, bigotry, or just plain stupidity. This is not a new condition in our country, just the latest example. It’s up to the people in her district; and there are many other districts in our country like her’s that contain a higher percentage of wingnuts than the one where we happen to live personally. Do they agree with this nonsense? Our nation needs to move toward a FACT based reality, and good luck with that.

Thanks for all the great posts, everyone. To follow up on one of the themes, I saw an online reportr about a pro-health care reform rally in New York City, (with about 3,000 people and good media coverage).

One of the signs was a take-off on the ‘WWJD’ mantra: It read “Who Would Jesus Deny?” It was accompanied by Bibical picture of a beggar at the feet of Jesus, and a balloon quote from Jesus saying. “Sorry…No insurance.”

I had that Who Would Jesus Deny as one of the signs I brought to Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky’s town hall meeting earlier this week. Some of the anti’s in the crowd outside saw it and truly looked ashamed.

To echo comments here, the reich wing “Christians” are anything but. They’re a bunch of bitter, hateful hypocrites.

United States government has been provding public health services since its inception. In 1776, the Continental Congress passed a penion law for soldiers that “granted half pay for life in cases of loss of limb or other serious disability.” In 1789 when the Constitution was ratified, the first pension act was passed by the U.S. Congress which affirmed the 1776 law. The U.S. Congress passed an act in 1798 to provide care for sick and injured merchant seamenby setting up a network of hospitals. After the war of 1812, in 1818 the Service Pension Law was passed, awarding pensions on the basis of financial need.

Bachmann has been so miseducated with propaganda and so inculcated with fear, that not only is she ignorant of our great history of taking care of our own, she is terrified by the very idea of what America is. Unfortunately, as a Senator she has the power to our country great harm with her unpatriotic fearmongering and total ignorance of history.

Reforming health insurance so people get the protection they pay for and providing a public option in the market to help foster competition are commonsense.

The Senator is high strung by nature. I hope she doesn’t injure herself of anyone else.

The Republic Party has been dirty tricking America and the Democrats since R. Milhouse Nixon’s time. It was in his administration that the dicks like Grover Norquist got their starts, with the full cooperation and approval of the leaders in the party and the occupants of every Republic administration since.

R. Reagan was no slouch when it came to lying, dirty tricks, and the like. He lied about selling weapons to the Contras, he lied about his record as governor of California, and he broke his campaign promises to the fundamentalist yahoos in both the right and especially the South as soon as he was elected. He hired on as his flacks some of the sleaziest of the PR shills in the Republic play list from lobbyists from K street to the nation’s conservative “think tanks “. And it was in his administration that the neocons got their noses bloodied but didn’t learn their lessons; they had blind faith in their warped ideas of how to “nation build,” and an uncritical belief that they had the answer for putting “America First” in the world – by any means necessary. It was they who, paradoxically, labeled government as the problem, and wanted to shrink government to leave only the military and as few federal regulations as they could get away with – and all without taxes for the rich, but with the middle class footing the bill.

The eight years of this last rotten administration saw the fruits of their “red baiting,” name calling, lying, slandering behavior, and their egging on of the loons, wingnuts, racists and plain batshit crazies on the far right and in the fundamentalist christian churches. These evil people targeted gays, the liberals, the Democratic party, abortion, labor unions -and anyone who didn’t agree with them became fair game for incessant attacks from a media controlled largely by the right: the few consolidated media giants which formed as the direct result of deregulation supported and enacted by largely Republic administrations, but especially the last.

Where are the voices of the so-called “conservatives” when our President is under such slanderous lies and violence-encouraging attacks from the people in their own churches and party?

In all its opposition to Bush, the fringes on the far left never called for his assassination, never called the flag hated, never called for secession from the nation, never denied his citizenship, as has been the calls from the far right fringe. The current political climate is the direct result of the Republic Party’s goading of these race baiters, name callers, tinfoil hat ranters. Not since the Civil War has political discourse been so reduced to shouting matches designed solely to disrupt and deny freely exchanged ideas. And not since the time of the robber barons, the captains of America’s businesses, have the corporations had such an influence over the country, its laws, and its citizens welfare. And it all has been accomplished by the largely elitist, White Republic Party.

Given the extreme secular nature of the Democratic party and their virulent anti-Christian bigotry (evident in many of the comments above), it seems sort of absurd for Democrats to be upset that Christian conservatives think they have God on their side because they are striving to follow his word. I don’t know if there is a God or not but it seems to me that if there is a God then that God actually is more likely to be on the side of whomever believes in and worships him than in those who deny his existence and revile God. If the seculars actually believe in their secular atheist philosophy then they should have the stones to stand by it, to concede God to the believers and to stake their position in this world. If they are wrong then they burn in Hell. If the secular progressives are right they have at least lived with integrity. If there are any Christians out there who have still managed to remain Democrats (in view of the anti-Christian sentiments that dominate the Democratic party) then they can legitimately dispute the claims of Christian conservatives but have to argue the point on religious grounds and if they have any integrity have to express their disagreement with the atheist secular progressives. In any case, this whining and complaining by secular progressives that the religious people feel they have God on their side is just absurd.

Think about this: you will vote in healthcare, and the the republicans will get elected. How’s that for you?

I think it is hilarious that you say that they are de-humanizing their opponents, and then you proceed to brush them off as wackos, and as one poster here said, hoped she would slit her wrists.

To be honest, I wish both the Dems and Reps would shut up and leave me alone. We, the American people, can solve our problems. I don’t need some dumb twit in the Whitehouse telling me what to do. And, yes, it is scary to have the ignoramus-in-chief speaking to our children. He is not their father (Dear Leader?), their teacher or their master. He should shut the hell up.

Also, you really should read your history before you call your selves progressives. The progressives advocated entry into WWI, eugenics and were extremely racist and passed segregation. Look it up. They also passed prohibition. Nice bunch of pricks, they.

If you are progressives, you are the very type of people I find repugnant bigots. So use the label carefully, or not at all, unless you really are racist warmongers with a moralistic stick up your butts. You aren’t though, are you?

And before you all go ape on me, I am not a Republican. I am so sick of people saying that. I think both parties suck, and are full of know-nothing arrogant a-holes. The republicans want a strong government abroad to abuse and harass people, and the Democrats want it here.

Lastly, to the Jesus Freak, Jesus never advocated stealing. If you are simply stealing from people to provide care for the poor, you are still just a thief. If you want to provide health care to the poor, go f-ing do it. Stop forcing others to do what you know is your responsibility and then saying it is what Jesus would do. Jesus never started a government program, or even advocated one. HE healed them, HE cared for them. You want to tax someone else, walk away listening to your Ipod and pat your self on the back for your goodness. You can get a full health care reform through government and you will have personally done nothing good for anyone. You blogged. Ooooohhh the compassion. And what did you blog about: how you hate other people who aren’t like you. They have religion. They live in other states. They live in the country so they must be stupid.

Hey, after all, call yourselves progressives. The label does indeed fit.
