As a long-time resident of the 8th Ward, I'm not totally enamored with Ms. Glidden, or the other council members for that matter. There seems to be no fiscal accountability with the City, especially with the recession and the need to cut spending. Instead, we're looking at a 11% plus increase to out property taxes, with very little to show for it. Most businesses have had to resort to lay-offs to balance their budgets, but we don't see that occurring with any of the City departments.

I totally agree with Mr. McDonald that we need to beef up Inspections (or get the existing Inspections department to be MUCH more accountable), and target neglectful property owners. Some neighborhoods have more than 60% rental, and there seems to be no tools to get problem owners to manage their properties responsibly.

Maybe it's time to bring a lot of fresh ideas and new people to the City Council!

[...] The Minnesota Independent writes: Cavlan has a different perspective: He believes cops are a large part of the problem. The registered nurse says he was motivated to run for city council in part by the heavy-handed security tactics during last year’s Republican National Convention and civil rights abuses by Minneapolis police officers. He wants a beefed-up civilian-review board to oversee the conduct of cops and believes that chief Tim Dolan should be fired. [...]

Thanks for the article Paul.

I would like to point out that "these people who need to be controlled" before we have a confrontation are the police.

Just in case it is not obvious from my positions.

Cheers and thank you paul for that seriously lacking concept of journalistic ethics and integrity these days.

I currently live in Elizabeth Glidden's ward and have only good things to say about her. I recently bought a house in a neighboring ward and I regret that she will no longer be representing me at city hall. Thank you Elizabeth

Elizabeth Glidden is the only candidate on this ballot that should represent the Eight Ward. She is a hardworking, honest and intelligent council person. You see her at all events and activities in the ward and she is completely approachable about city issues. The rest of the candidates seem to be more opportunists who have a personal agenda and are only running because of the new voting deal.

None of the other candidates have the experience and good sense that we need on the city council. I'll admit that Glidden doesn't look like a tough fighter but she sure has been doing a good job fighting for the people of the Eight Ward. I'm voting for Glidden and leaving the rest blank to make sure no one gets in on a wave of "almost as good" as Elizabeth.
