The Twin Ports area of Duluth, Minn., and Superior, Wis., held its 23rd annual LGBT Pride event Labor Day weekend, drawing a record 12,000 people. Anti-gay protesters shouted at parade participants and festival-goers, while politicians angling for the DFL nomination for governor worked the crowds. The festival boasted a big name act with international drag sensation RuPaul.

Sen. John Marty, who has announced his campaign for governor, had a large presence at the festival and parade. St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman, widely rumored to be running for governor, was a long way from home on Sunday when he and a contingent of supporters walked in the parade. Sen. Al Franken was also in the parade.

Protesters turned out during the festival and parade warning attendees that they must repent or burn in hell.

There were only a half-dozen protesters who heckled the crowd with a megaphone. At the parade, members of the Superior Police Department managed to isolate them.

International drag star RuPaul entertained thousands at Bayfront Park. She told the crowd to work toward making the next generation an inclusive one for LGBT people.

Senator Marty was the only DFL Candidate for Governor with a booth at Duluth Pride Fest. He’s long been a champion of LGBT Issues. He was recognized as the Chief Author of Senate File 120, the Minnesota “Marriage and Family Protection Act” – which will provide equal marriage rights to same-sex couples. It was a beautiful day in Duluth spent with wonderful, loving people. The few protesters that were there only managed to make themselves look ignorant, intolerant and out of touch. It’s time for Marriage Equality in MN, and it’s time for John Marty for Governor!

(Thanks for the article Andy & MN Independent!)

There were not any “anti-gay” “protesters” at the GLBT event in Duluth and Superior.
There were four of us who were there to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and call ALL sinners
to repentance. Fornicators, porn addicts, drunkards, homosexual and otherwise…
Notice that our sign did not say a thing about homosexuality.
I find it interesting that this news site did not interview us nor report on ALL the facts of the story.
We do not target this homosexual event, we are at all different kinds of events in Duluth with gospel signs and banners, from the college campus, to the downtown bus stop, to the Air show etc…
Nor did this newspaper report on all the people at “gay pride 2009″ who flipped us off, spat at us and made inappropriate and disgusting comments…
For a community that prides itself on “Tolerance” I certainly did not see a lot of “Tolerance” that day!

Doesn’t our declaration of independence state at the very begining that all men are created equal? So when will we actualy start to follow our own constitution and allow marriage to all people? So if people are against GLBT marriages would they then be against America? We better get Michelle Bachman to ivestigate these protestors to see if they are pro America or anti America. Congrats on a great festival!! Keep up the good work =).

John: Radical fundamentalists don’t believe in the Consitiution because it’s not mentioned in the Bible.

Andy B: Thanks for the brief on the festival – I managed to attend one of the Superior events and was delighted that the cops managed to keep the event civil by giving the event participants a buffer zone from the protesters. There was a lot of concern by many of my friends because there was a great deal of anti-GLBT/anti-festival Op-Eds in the Duluth paper leading up to the event. Some simply chose to keep their distance under the fear of violence.

Michael, //There were not any “anti-gay” “protesters” at the GLBT event in Duluth and Superior.//

If you were at the GLBT event with intentions to dissuade people from the “gay lifestyle,” as you believe, then yes, you were an anti-gay protester.

//There were four of us who were there to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and call ALL sinners
to repentance. Fornicators, porn addicts, drunkards, homosexual and otherwise…//

Exactly. You can paint it up all you want, but you were protesting homosexuality.

//Notice that our sign did not say a thing about homosexuality.//

And yet you quote Romans 1:18-23 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, which are among the most common Bible verses perverted to condemn homosexuality.

//We do not target this homosexual event//

Right, you just happened to all be walking together and stumbled upon the Gay Pride parade carrying your signs and t-shirts.

//we are at all different kinds of events in Duluth with gospel signs and banners, from the college campus, to the downtown bus stop, to the Air show etc…//

But the fact that you’re at any of them isn’t a matter of coincidence. It’s a matter of targetting. Those are the places you picked over, let’s say, the Catholic church down the street, or the door-to-door neighborhood on the south side of town.

//Nor did this newspaper report on all the people at “gay pride 2009″ who flipped us off, spat at us and made inappropriate and disgusting comments…//

Perhaps you should put a little more effort into your planning before you go pimping Jesus around to people who obviously have learned to love themselves without fear of retribution.

I disagree with the protesters, but take solace in the fact that they looked like complete jerkoffs.

Hurray for those who put this event together. My girlfriend and I met lots of great people who were attending this event. Way to go, Twin Ports.
