An AP-Yahoo poll last week found that among American adults, the most common descriptor for Sen. John McCain was "old." And what better way to reinforce that image than ’70s rock? The band Styx has been tapped to perform at a nonpartisan party called AgNite during the Republican National Convention in September. Styx is best known for their 31 year old hit "Come Sail Away."
In contrast, the Black Eyed Peas will be headlining during the Democratic National Convention at a private party thrown by Hollywood’s Creative Coalition. The Black Eyed Peas are best known for their hip hop album Elephunk released 3 years ago, and for their associations with with youngsters like Justin Timberlake and Fergie.
Styx is being brought in by the Minnesota Agri-Growth Council, but only after they tried to get Jakob Dylan, The Wallflowers’ front-man and son of legend Bob Dylan. Rumor has it that the younger Dylan agreed but the elder quashed the idea.
"I think it was a fit with where they were touring," Daryn McBeth, executive director of the agribusiness trade group Minnesota Agri-Growth Council told the Pioneer Press. "And evidently, the venue and nature of our event was fine. And then, I’m told, Bob Dylan got them to think otherwise."
