I sometimes truly wonder what the extremist, Grover Norquist drones would leave as part of government. As Dan rightly points out, there are any number of socialized services that are provided by government. Which of these would eric disband?

I assume the Department of Education is gone, that seems to be a consistent bugbear for the right. Perhaps because of all that evolution they teach-you know, facts?

Pretty sure Interior, and everything in it would be gone as well. This includes the BIA, National Park Service, and we'd have to close all the museums that make up the Smithsonian. I guess every citizen should just go out and get their own Kitty Hawk Flyer, stuffed bull elephant, and Archie Bunker's armchair. Don't forget the National Zoo, too. Giraffes and pandas for everyone-you just have to pay for the food.

We could privatize the military too, as Eric Ferguson mentions. Then we'd have no expense in fulfilling our Consitutional obligation to provide for the common defense. Oh wait, I guess we have to pay the contractors, right. Hmm.

I really believe some people don't think before they talk (or comment).

The odd thing about mentioning the government won WWII or any other conflict is conservatives seem not realize the military is part of the government. The people in it are government employees. Of course, some do realize it and hate that fact. The reason the armed forces are so reliant on contractors is the neocons, especially Rumsfeld, wanted a hollowed out army with everything privatized. I think if these fools could abolish the armed forces and just hire a mercenary company, they would do it and damn the consequences.

Eric Ferguson is absolutely correct. I couldn't agree more.

It is jaw-dropping what total BS these conservatives believe about health care and "socialism."

Let's bring it down to basics: In a society, everybody pools their money together to create SERVICES that we otherwise couldn't provide for ourselves. We pay for police, and they protect us. When your house is burning, there's a fire department to put out the fire. We have schools to educate our children, roads and bridges so we can travel, and parks that are maintained so we can enjoy the outdoors.

These are all funded by citizens, and they make our society better and more livable.

Surely one can agree to a concept this simple, right? So what is so goddamn different about health care?? What is it that makes health care so different from other services we need for a healthy society? This is a complete breakdown in compassion for our fellow neighbors.

Socialism = Society. It seems to me that if you're anti-socialist, you're anti-social.

If you really get to the crux of what the conservatives believe, you see they really don't care about anyone but themselves and their wallet. They go nuts when they see their money being used to help other people, and then make excuses to justify their selfishness. When society suffers, they look the other way and say, "Well, that's not my problem. They should just work harder and eat better (more expensive) food." That's very anti-social. Meanwhile, medical costs are now the leading cause of bankruptcy in the US.

They keep bringing up how the government is a giant bureaucracy that can't do anything right. What about the police or fire departments? What about schools, MnDot or the park systems? That's your government, and they work just fine.

If people can't afford health care, this service should be provided by the government. If you can afford your own, good for you. Just one thing... How come the vast majority of parents choose to send their kids to public schools? How come nobody is hiring their own private police force? Why isn't anyone building their own roads? If I'm following the anti-healthcare logic correctly, all these things should change as well.

Yes, the government is in a tough spot financially. But this was created by George W. Bush, and no one can't deny that. He's gone, and we'll get through this. Besides, this will save our nation billions of dollars. The public option isn't a burden, it's an opportunity!

Our government can do anything. It put a man on the Moon, it built the first transcontinental railway and the Panama Canal, it created Social Security and simultaneously defeated the Nazis and Japs.

Our government is us, and we can do anything. Surely we can find the compassion for our fellow neighbors to provide health care, making a better, more livable society.

Right now, we're seeing where the conservatives stand. They're anti-social.

Sorry to rant, but... I'm a socialist.

If Demko made up those quotes, he deserves a Nobel prize for Literature. That is exactly how some of these people talk. Just this last week one of the louder local teabaggers left a comment at my blog about how a prominent Minnesota liberal's daughter has sex with dogs. He even specified the breed. Not a leader in their movement, but he's been a guest on local talk radio, and is listed on most conservative Minnesota blogrolls.

Larouchies, btw, are usually more coherent, and more on message. Cultists usually are. Talk radio fans, otoh, are all over the place and often splice dissimilar thoughts into the same sentence.

Eric, where hasn't socialism worked? Western Europe seems to be doing just fine with their national health systems. You mentioend Switzerland, but the rest of them wonder what is wrong the US. They spend half of what we do for better results, they're freed from the fear of being denied access, and no one goes bankrupt for medical bills. If that's socialism, we need much more of it.

I wouldn't worry about it. This country is so badly polarized it couldn't pass wind, much less healthcare reform. If Clinton or McCain had been elected President, everything would be status quo and all we'd have in the news to listen to would be economic woes.
My question is if the United States has such great medical care, why is our infant mortality rate so high? 33rd worst according to United Nations or 46th worst according to CIA World Factbook.
