Al Franken raised $2.3 million in the second quarter of 2008, according to his campaign. The Democrat has $4.2 million cash on hand to wage what is expected to be the most expensive Senate race in the country. Franken has now pulled in $11.6 million since beginning his campaign.

At the end of March, incumbent Norm Coleman had raised $8.7 million and had $3.5 millon in the bank. (The Republican has not yet released his second quarter figures, which are due to the Federal Elections Commission by Tuesday.)

By comparison, Amy Klobuchar took in a total of $9.1 million in her successful 2006 bid for Senate, while Republican Mark Kennedy raised $9.8 million.

Franken’s money continues to come disproportionately from out-of-state donors. According to the campaign, 4,600 Minnesotans made contributions in the second quarter, or roughly 42 percent of the total. During the entire campaign, more than 104,000 individuals have given money, 18,000 of them from Minnesota — or approximately 17 percent.
