Just listened to DW's Terry Gross interview. My own concerns grow greater, mostly because I still have not felt any journalist has researched and written about the scores of front groups that are likely funding these faux "Populist" movements. In 10 months since my late (ultraconservative) father's mail has been forwarded, an average of 10 pounds of scams and paranoid propaganda pours in each week. Most egregious are the groups that have risen behind the intertwined 501(c)(4) and 501(c)(3) non-profit categories, despite being purely political, spewing vitriol and mindless distortions labeled as "educational" or some such rubbish. Michelle Easton is bad, but Amy Ridenour may be worse, a likely money-laundering front that probably filters hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to who-knows what campaigns or media spin agencies.
In the long run, it may prove a mistake, for long-standing groups like the ACLU to have taken a stance defending the 501(c) categories against stricter non-political interpretation. Short-sighted and self-serving, once the Really Big Money is soon unleashed.
It is ironic how silent those who demand a strict interpretation of the Constitution are, in regard to the pending extension of Bill of Rights protection for non-living Corporations. Their "Right" to Free Speech will drown out the meager voices of mere men and women in a tidal flood of political misinformation never before seen in the history of the United States.
The imbeciles who throw out words like "socialist" and "fascist" and think they are the same, may soon get an education with regard to the latter.
Our version of Capitalism has unfortunately debased once-noble abstractions like "freedom" to marketing jargon, "just do it." Real education is a threat;"Religion" has nothing to do with enlightenment, or understanding, but only preaching, and kindergarten-level minds are free of critical or discerning thought; indoctrinate so the minds close. Hide behind banners bearing slogans, feel self-righteous and Chosen. Remind you of anyone?
