State sends experts to Germany for health care how-to

Hermann and Cal LudemanState Human Services Commissioner Cal Ludeman and a dozen other Minnesota health care leaders travel to Germany Tuesday to learn about the government-regulated private health insurance system there that covers everyone. Here’s hoping they get a better reception than Hermann the German gave Tiberius Caesar’s Roman legions 2,000 years ago this month, as re-enacted over the weekend in New Ulm, Minn.

In September, 9 A.D., Hermann, whose statue (shown in photo before assembly) towers over New Ulm, triumphed in a running battle through Germany’s Teutenborg Forest over Tiberius’ forces, who were left in urgent need of medical services.

Here’s how the battle looked as captured on YouTube:

Ludeman’s corps may be able to avoid such treatment if they enter Germany singing the theme song from his 1986 race for Minnesota governor: “Cal LUUUdeman, He’s WUUUnderbar!”

Minnesota health care leaders are going to Germany.

That has what to do with Hermann the German? Fine, there’s a statue in New Ulm. Great.

But invoking a massacre of Roman legions that happened two thousand years ago has absolutely nothing to do with the important subject of what Minnesota can learn from how Germany handles health care. Frankly, this story’s “angle” is pretty insulting to modern-day Germany, as it compares them to ancient Teutonic hordes.

MnIndy usually provides pretty solid local journalism. I have to say, this article is pretty disappointing. The attempt at “fun” doesn’t rub off so well on this one.

I’d be interested in knowing who else went on the trip.

Thanks for the comments. The AP story this blog post is based on didn’t have a lot of detail on who’s going. Besides Ludeman, it’s “legislators and officials from the Mayo Clinic, University of Minnesota, Planned Parenthood and AARP.” No offense to modern-day Germany intended.

Nice junket QuayLude Man. This is what Human Services people do after they deny
MCHA (public option health plan) to people when they run out of COBRA like he did to me.
I hope he is horribly disfigured over there in the Fatherland, dumped by his insurance
and rendered broke and homeless.
