Tom Emmer: Democrats not ‘Freedom-loving Americans’

TomEmmer212When running for statewide office, it’s probably best not to insult a large chunk of the electorate. Rep. Tom Emmer, who hopes to secure the top spot in a crowded field of Republican gubernatorial candidates, has become known at the Capitol for his fiery rhetoric. His latest:

“I don’t think you can call yourself a freedom-loving American and be a Democrat,” he told the Marshall Independent. “I don’t think that’s a grassroots Democrat who says now ‘That’s not what I voted for, this isn’t the America I want.’ It’s the leaders of the Democrat party.”

Emmer is likely posturing in advance of the GOP state convention in St. Paul on Saturday, where party activists will hold a straw poll to gauge support for the party’s pick for governor in 2010.

“I don’t think you can call yourself a freedom-loving American and be a Democrat,” Mr. Emmer states.

How would he know? He seems to be neither.

More generally, one of the more annoying things politicians do is to state what their political opposition believes -the twisting and distorting to the dark side that’s done in such declarations should be an embarassment to the pol who offers such drivel.

Mr. Emmer has no monopoly on patriotism or love of freedom. He should be ashamed to say such things – that he’s not reveals one of his flaws

I suppose there are no atheists and only Republicans in foxholes. Does this guy think that no Democrats died in military service? What an asshat! This is the modern Minnesota GOP for you… rotten to the core with self-serving career politicians who are only in it for themselves. Its’ the Norming of the GOP.

what is wrong with these people – do they always have to try appeal to the stupid, the least informed, the lowest common denominator? Is this the best these people can do? How does this guy sleep at night? Say anything and do anything to get elected. Do any of these guys have any kind of conscience or sense of social responsibility? I am so tired of this kind of BS – how do we make it stop?

I doubt he really believes it, but he’s running for a nomination. It’s really to bad.

The “freedom-loving” republican that Emmer is talking about is one who loves to evade paying their fair share of taxes, loves the art of the Big Lie in politics, loves to see the gap between the wealthy and the middle class grow ever wider, and one who loves to wrap himself in the false cloak of patriotism in a desperate effort to appear morally superior.

I don’t want to presume to know exactly what Mr. Emmers was thinking or trying to say, but it’s very probable he failed to properly articulate his point. The quintessential American value is respect for the dignity of the indiviudual – individual liberty.

I’ve been curious though, how liberals reconcile their desires for liberty with their continued cries for more government. Liberals are staunch defenders of the first amendment, abortion (government hands off my body and out of the bedroom), their general hysteria regarding the patriot act, etc.

Yet the liberal democrat supports speech codes and draconian campaign finance laws; liberal democrats are constantly assualting religous freedom (almost exclusively Christians). Most recently many liberals have denounced the opponents of HR 3200 for showing up at townhalls and expressing their opinions to their elected representatives. No doubt many liberal democrats would like to see the “fairness” doctrine reinstated. Liberal democrats generally support the some form of government run healthcare and “cap and trade” legislation. Liberals may even support politicians telling us what light bulbs to buy.

My brother and I have had converstaions with some of you who unwittingly complain about high taxes and the smoking ban in bars. Ironically both are resrictions on liberity and the result of overreaching government supported mainly by liberal democrats.

All of this increases the power and reach of government thereby decresaing your liberty. With each new tax and piece of legislation, we surrender more of our freedom, liberty and dignty over to politicians. So, how do all of you reconcile these competing philosophies? Or do you simply accept a permanent state of cognitive dissoance?

So, either you believe in the inherent dignity and liberity of people as granted to us by God and allow them to make decisions for themselve, or you believe most people are no more than cattle to be led by the nose, to be treated as children.

Thank you

Would this be the same Tom Emmer that said we can’t trust doctors and patients to make appropriate decisions in end-of-life situations? The same Tom Emmer that said government — not doctors — should decide whether chronic and terminally ill patients can use marijuana to relieve pain and suffering? Tom seems confused. Big government is bad, except when he decides that big government should deny citizens the power to make decisions over their own life.

The same Tom Emmer who believes the Earth is 6,000 years old:

The same Tom Emmer who refers to climate change as “Al Gore’s climate porn”:

The same Tom Emmer who would rather talk about porn than pork:

As for your question, Thomas: do they always have to try appeal to the stupid, the least informed, the lowest common denominator?

Yes, because that’s who exactly who votes for inbred asshats like Tom Emmer.

George,

Tom Emmers aside, I have no dog in that fight. Your arguements are as dissapointing as they are illogical. You stoop to name calling for those who disagree with you – where does that leave us?

Thank you

Roger –

We end up with public figures – elected officials who are supposed to represent all of us saying
“I don’t think you can call yourself a freedom-loving American and be a Democrat,”

No, Thank You.

“Your arguements are as dissapointing as they are illogical.” Illogical…sort of like almost all of your 9:57 post.

Mostly you confuse “more government” with using government to fix malignant failures and abuses of private enterprise, and that it somehow would means less freedom for you, personally. Are you still mad about that whole paying workers for overtime thing? You lost a lot of liberty back then…

Maybe you should start stockpiling those nice, bright 150w incandescent light bulbs, you’re completely justified in worrying about your light bulb liberties. And be careful what you post on websites – they are watching….

Thanks, George, for the very appropriate links, all necessary reminders of who Emmers is, and what he stands for. In any given election, someone like him can always count on the same 30%. I’ll bet he has a lot of friends on the other side of the aisle.

Roger,

Thanks for the humor, you could be another Stephen Colbert. By masquerading as a conservative and spouting simplistic talking points, you show through humor how foolish the typical conservative rant can be. Thanks again.

Democracy is ; Three weasles and a mouse voting on, whats for supper. Democracy is the direct opposite of freedom, it is mob rule. You brainwashed sheep must wake-up. Please understand the “Individual” , is of supreme importance , and the thing that historically protected Each American , was the now trampled on Constitution. The Constitution , if followed will protect all who Truly love Freedom .
