Former Vice President Walter Mondale sent out a fundraising appeal Tuesday on behalf of 6th Congressional District challenger Tarryl Clark. An additional money pitch was dispatched by Patty Wetterling, who unsuccessfully ran against Michele Bachmann for an open House seat in 2006.

The appeals come as the third-quarter fundraising deadline looms on Wednesday, the first since Clark announced that she’s running against Bachmann. The Democratic state senator will undoubtedly want to report an impressive fundraising total in order to put national groups, including the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, on notice that she intends to run a viable campaign. Clark’s only challenger for the DFL endorsement, Maureen Reed, brought in more than $230,000 during the second quarter of 2009.

Bachmann’s hoping for a strong financial showing by Wednesday’s filing deadline, too. She sent out a fundraising appeal of her own on Tuesday, noting that she’s among eight Republicans targeted by the Democrats in 2010.

“I must show a solid bank account to keep the Democrats from pouring millions into my opponents’ campaigns,” she wrote. “They’ve spent millions here before, and right now they’re gearing up to do it again!”

I don’t think Wetterling sent anything out on behalf of Clark. Also, Steve Miles sent out a fundraising email for Maureen Reed. Probably worth noting…

MNBlue is incorrect. Here’s the text of Wetterling’s letter, which was distributed by Clark’s campaign:

>>>PATTY WETTERLING

Dear Friend,

Over the years, we’ve worked together for many important causes. Today, I’m asking you to join me again in an important cause for our community: new, sensible leadership for Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District.

I’m proud to support my friend Tarryl Clark in her campaign for Congress.

Tarryl and I have worked together as advocates, as mothers, and as leaders to make real change on behalf of Minnesotans. Tarryl speaks passionately about the needs of our children and families. But what makes Tarryl effective is her willingness to roll up her sleeves to deliver on the issues that matter. Time and again, when her constituents or her neighbors have needed her, she gets the job done.

That’s the kind of common-sense leadership we need in Washington.

I am proud to support Tarryl’s campaign for Congress, and I hope you will join me today by making a contribution of $250, $100, $50, or whatever you can afford to Tarryl’s campaign for Congress.

Tarryl and I have traveled the 6th District together, going door-to-door, person-to-person, because both of us believe in the power of affecting change by working from the grassroots up. We believe that, by stretching across the community and reaching the real people in the 6th district, we can make a real difference.

And that’s precisely the leadership that has been missing with Michele Bachmann in Congress. Bachmann has spent more of her time on the talk shows than making a difference for Minnesota — but those talk shows have fueled a national following that are ready to fund her campaign.

That’s why I’m asking you to support Tarryl’s campaign today. Let’s make sure Tarryl has the resources she needs to run a winning campaign and return sensible leadership to Congress.

I’m proud to support Tarryl, and I hope you will join me.

Sincerely,

Patty Wetterling

Patty Wetterling

p.s. Tarryl has a critically important deadline on Wednesday, September 30th. I understand personally how important it is to have a strong showing of support for Tarryl before this deadline, so please contribute TODAY.<<<

Was I wrong about Steve Miles?

Yes, I believe you are correct about Steve Miles. He wrote a letter endorsing Maureen Reed. I don’t seem to have a copy of it. But here’s a link with at least a portion of the letter:

If Michelle encourages more hatred toward census workers she won’t have to worry about fundraising, she won’t stand a chance in Minnesota.

Sure way to lose again in the 6th would be to endorse Reed..This is our last chance at Bachman.

Tarryl Clark is easily the best candidate to run against Bachmann. And if Reed forces a primary because she doesn’t get the endorsement–which she won’t on the first ballot–she will be a pariah in not only the 6th CD but the entire country.

Tarryl will be chewed up and spit out by MB. The only hope is Marueen Reed. She is far smarter and tougher than Ms. Clark.

Reed should run for governor. There’s a huge hole in the middle of the candidate field. Tarryl Clark should represent the 6th, strengthening the district’s voice and influence in national government with a positive majority party message.
