A Congresswoman Offers Response to Nutjobs who defund ACORN

mccollumU.S. Rep. Betty McCollum is circulating a bill that would stop federal funding of corporations that commit felony crimes. The ACORN Act (pdf) would also stop such corporations from funding federal campaigns and limit their lobbying. The bill’s acronym stands for “Against Corporations Organizing to Rip-off the Nation” and comes on the heels of various arms of the federal government cutting off funds and ending involvement with the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN).

In a statement, McCollum’s office said:

Congress took action to defund one non-profit serving poor Americans — ACORN -– but not against the billion dollar corporations that are actually guilty of felonies. For the 345 Members of Congress who voted to defund ACORN this is [sic] bill is an opportunity to support corporate accountability and responsibility while punishing corporate crime.

Meanwhile, five Republican candidates for governor and Minnesota Majority demanded that Attorney General Lori Swanson launch an investigation of ACORN in Minnesota.

Actually, signers were former state auditor Pat Anderson (R), Representative Tom Emmer (R), Representative Marty Seifert (R), Felix Montez (R), Peter Roess (DFL), Repredentative Paul Kohls (R), Senator David Haan and Senator Mike Jungbauer (R). Funny how nobody mentions the Democrat candidate for governor. For a better recap, see here: http://www.minnesotamajority.org/Home/tabid/112/EntryID/215/Default.aspx

Those who are clueless about why nobody mentions that DFL “candidate” might try reading his 2008 campaign finance report:

Perhaps Minnesota Majority should enlist Ole Savior as well.

Why is it necessary for republicans to constantly lie about things? Or is it that they are just incompetent and can’t be bothered with the fact that Peter Roess is not a DFLer?

It’s about time. McCollum thinks that this is somehow tit-for-tat? Criminals are criminals and none should be buying our representation. Round them all up and throw them in jail if they break the law. That’s how it should be.

Peter Roess stood up in the press conference and stated that he is a Democrat. His gubernatorial campaign finance reports say his political affiliation is DFL. Did he fail some secret DFL litmus test that excludes him from the party he claims to call home?

Also missing from almost all reporting was the fact that felons who illegally registered to vote have been prosecuted and 5 have pled guilty in Ramsey County. 18 more are charged and over 100 are under investigation – just in Ramsey. Further, there is evidence that statewide, as many as 2,800 felons not only registered to vote, but actually voted illegally in the 2008 election. Seems like significant news. Where’s the reporting? Nice work informing the public, “journalists.”

ACORN is a grass roots organization that has done wonderful things for many disenfranchised people over the years.

I think those rediculous tapes have been doctored and altered. Ever heard of entrapemnt?

ACORN is the latest fall guy for the Republi-thug culture. Next they will be going after the American Cancer Society. Throw all the Republi-thugs in jail!

Today I was ASTOUNDED to learn: ACORN Foresaw the Foreclosure Crisis in 2001!!!

The grassroots group helped Oakland pass a tough anti-predatory lending law that would have halted the housing crisis before it started. Then subprime lenders started making campaign contributions in Sacramento. http://www.eastbayexpress.com/ebx/PrintFriendly?oid=1203397

I called Rep McCollum office and gave her 10 ‘attaboys” and have called my Rep and told him to get on board!

First, tell me what dictionary has “disenfranchised ” – it’s a Gorism at best

Secondly, ACORN predicted the housing mess? BS, everyone in the trades or real estate saw this coming but much like a train going off a cliff it was impossible to stop.

Thirdly, ACORN is corrupt – simply because they have power. All who have power will do anything not to lose that power. – Emperor Palpatine
