At the Bruce Vento Dinner on Sunday, Rep. Betty McCollum lashed out at those who say a health care reform package in Congress should be bipartisan. Hosted by the 4th Congressional district DFL, the dinner remembers Vento’s two decades representing the district in Congress until his death in 2000.
“Now is the time to pass a public health insurance option. Now is the time to expand access to quality health care, control rising costs, keep American businesses competitive, and improve the health of the American people,” she told the crowd of assembled party activists.
“You know there is a lot of talk about how Democrats need to reach out to Republicans and work for a ‘bipartisan’ health care bill. I am sick and tired of talk of a bipartisan health care bill — that’s just a plan for less health care for people in need and more profits for corporations driven by greed,” she said. “Since I’ve been in Congress there have been a number of historic bipartisan bills — historically bad!”
Via the Minnesota Progressive Project, here’s the full text of McCollum’s speech:
Friends, you know Bruce Vento never shied away from a tough vote or an issue of justice or an opportunity to make sure the lives of all Americans was made a little better. As Americans, as Minnesotans, as Democrats – we are in a fight. We are in a fight for justice, for a basic human right, for an opportunity for every American to live a better, healthier life.Fixing our nation’s broken health care system is something I have been fighting for since 2000 when you all worked so hard to send me to Congress.
Friends, now is the moment – no more excuses, no more delays, no more wasting time.
In 2009, with Barack Obama in the White House, with Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken in the U.S. Senate, with 5 DFLers in the U.S. House of Representatives – this is the time to pass health care reform.
Now is the time to pass a public health insurance option. Now is the time to expand access to quality health care, control rising costs, keep American businesses competitive, and improve the health of the American people.
Reforming health care and making coverage available to 47 million uninsured Americans, improving coverage for the under insured, holding insurance companies accountable by eliminating exclusions for pre=existing conditions and caps on payment should not be partisan issues. Republicans get sick too, don’t they?
But sadly, this is not the case.
Republicans in Congress are the party of profits, not working people. And when I say profits, I don’t mean Old Testament “prophets” – I am talking about corporate profits.
They are fighting for the CEOs and the profiteers, not regular folks who can’t afford to fill their prescription or even go to see a doctor. You know there is a lot of talk about how Democrats need to reach out to Republicans and work for a “bipartisan” health care bill. I am sick and tired of talk of a bipartisan health care bill – that’s just a plan for less health care for people in need and more profits for corporations driven by greed. Since I’ve been in Congress there have been a number of historic bipartisan bills – historically bad!
Remember No Child Left Behind? That was bipartisan and it has turned our public schools into testing factories.
Remember the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts? There was bipartisan legislation that succeeded in transforming a projected $5.6 trillion surplus into trillions of dollars of debt while making the rich richer and contributed to the greatest disparity in income in history.
Finally, do you remember that terrific bipartisan success called the Iraq War? That bipartisan resolution authorizing President Bush to invade Iraq has cost our nation thousands of lives and over $1 trillion dollars. So here is my recommendation: Democrats will put a strong bill on the floor of the House in the upcoming weeks with that meets the needs of the children, the families, seniors, and the next generation of Americans – and we will pass it!
If Republicans want a bipartisan bill – they can join us, vote for health care reform, and work with us make America a stronger nation. We have an opportunity to transform our country and take an enormous step towards finally making health care a right rather than privilege. We can not miss this opportunity – millions are counting on us. So, you can count on me to pass the strongest health care bill possible. This is the time for action and courage, not excuses and delay. If Bruce were with us today we know how he would vote and you know how I will vote.
And, I know you will stand with me because together we will make history in 2009 and make America healthier and stronger. Thank you for all of your support now and over the years.
Thank you.

There is not enough kool aid in the world, even if Saul Alinski and Rom Emanual forced it intraveinously, to stomach McCollum’s half truths, misrepresentations and forced rationale. Easy to see she found enough however. Sad reflection on 4th district voters.

By extension, it seems my representative is saying i’m fighting for CEOs and profiteers and that only if I agree with her and the other progressive sycophants can I achieve bipartisanship. And I suppose too that if I disagree with her approach to better the nation that I am some form of evil, along with her Republican legislator counterparts and decent hard-working professionals in the healthcare industry. What a wonderful thing. The things she says she is for: expanded access, cost control, competition, and improved health will not be achieved with a public option, but would be achieved with market-based reforms.
It’s confounding to me that the same narrow-minded, tunnel-vision lemmings that follow the progressive standard bearers when they fight for liberty at the expense of our efforts to fight our terrorist enemies are the first to surrender that liberty for the sake of government takeovers of our healthcare, car makers, and banks. A little intellectual courage and consistency would be refreshing and quite noticeable if any of our politicians had the fortitude.
I also need McCollum to educate me on how exactly, and by what justification, that healthcare is now a right.

Dear Betty,
Please hold your groung. Do not fall victim to the lies and smear tactics of those Republi-thugs. They simply want to make more money off the backs of the poor and sickly.
Health care will be a right afforded to us by the Democrat Party and Mr. Obama. The Republi-thugs only want to keep the poor people down and not let us have what is rightfully ours.
Long live Barack Obama, and long live the people!
Ms. McCollum, Thanks for supporting all of us little people so we can get what we deserve.

In response to Residual Forces, I think you’ll find most Americans are sick and tired of bipartisanship, as well. The bills in their current form are a product of those attempts at satisfying far too many groups which don’t deserve to be controlling the debate. A classic example is one provision that even vitamins need to be bought from a pharmacy. Industry deserves a voice in Congress, but not a pen.

The text of the speech is long enough that a thinking, honest, intelligent person would be able to find something to disagree with Representative McCollum without making up paranoid crap.

I didn’t know GM and Chrysler were being managed by the government…

Dave,
Just the reverse. The White House is being managed by organized labor. Organized labor owns GM and Chrysler. GM and Chrysler are owned by the UAW which got a sweetheart deal that was orchestrated by the White House and Dem Congress.
Speaking of paranoid crap, how about McCollum’s assertion about the motivations of those opposed to the public option, I quote ” that’s just a plan for less health care for people in need and more profits for corporations driven by greed.” Only the paranoid believe that, really.
What a wonderful representative we have.

The White House is being managed by organized labor.
….proof, please. Sounds like a pretty paranoid statement, considering card check hasn’t gone anywhere yet.
Organized labor owns GM and Chrysler.
…owns a minority share in is not the same as owns outright. get real.
UAW which got a sweetheart deal
…why, because some investors didn’t get theirs first? Are any of them out of a job because of it? Nope. Violins are playing…
Speaking of paranoid crap, you are so right. The system we have right now is perfect. It’s the American way, making a profit by screwing people.

Dave,
If you knew anything about bankruptcy law you would know that the unions and the their pension funds essentially cut in line and got more in bankruptcy than they deserved – at least based upon the entire history of bankruptcy law. Bondholders, yes investors, had a superior claim on the bankruptcy estate yet got proportionally less that the politically favored subordinate claims of the unions. These bondholders that your violins sarcastically weep for are US citizens, voters and taxpayers who deserve equal and fair protection under the law. Whether anyone lost (or saved) jobs is not relevant and is certainly not the goal of any bankruptcy action.
Do you suppose that unions have little or no influence on the Dems and White House, or do you think that power equation is about right?
The Unions and their pension funds are the largest equity holders and combined with the governments share possess a majority.
Are you suggesting that the making of profit is by definition screwing someone. the market is full of choices and no one is forcing you to make bad choices – only governement has that power. Now if someone is in fact getting screwed (fraud, theft, etc.) we have laws and courts for that. Would you prefer that profits be outlawed?

Do You Think Our Senators really care about “affordable,” health care for the average American? Neither Al or Amy has either signed on to S. 604, the senate version of H.R. 1207, that has at least 289 co sponsors. What exactly does “affordable” health care mean? More socialism will only bring more tyranny. What does Employer responsibility mean? Does that mean Budgeting properly and not relying on big brother handouts so the state and federal government can tell them what to do. Does that mean not lying to their employees? Or expanding the size and look of the buildings while laying them off and trying to get rid of any pension. Wake up people the “Public option” Is another term for totalatarian tip toe incrementelisim so that big brother can micromanage every aspect of our lives. The social engineers that brought us medicare are going to bring us a public option that eventually everyone but the so called elite will be forced into. Has anyone seen the stock in verichip lately? Vote yes for real reform. Does anyone know what that means? Real reform means Read The Constitution! Where is health care a right in the constitution? Or maybe you want to live under agenda 21 U.N. Dictatorship? Turn off the TV and read! Tell the congress that we demand health freedom. Tell Them that we demand you read any bill. Tell them that we the people demand time to read and understand any bill. Understand what an individual mandate is. Say No! No last minute additions. No threats of martial law or a breakdown of society. You people that think you have power, don’t you understand that you will be forced to accept the poison too. Please break your conditioning, or maybe you get off on it! You might have a few more toys a few more vacations with a few more drinks to dull your depression of the false reality that you have created. In the meantime your grandchildren will be born with more health problems. Your loved ones will see more and more early onset alzheimers and a breakthrough will be right around the corner with a new implant. Do you know that “herd immunity” is really only pseudoscience? Or maybe you like being treated as cattle. 100% is the goal. Where is the real evidence? It’s hidden in scientific doublespeak. This is herd mentality. Look up^ Look Around We are in a petri dish! Do you know what a “mock up” virus is? MF 59? Aso3? Squalene? GWS? GBS? Read! Investigate! Chan says swine flu is mild, yet Freiden says, “on average flu is not a mild illness.” As Public Enemy would say, “Don’t Believe the Hype!” Prof Griff knows whats going on! Peace! Good, Love& Liberty will prevail! (Tyranny)
