FEMA to Bachmann: Yes, you’re ‘missing something here’

Portrait_biggerAm i missing something here?” reads a Twitter message from U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann questioning why ACORN got fire-prevention funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). FEMA’s answer: Yes, you are.

Bachmann tweeted twice about a Washington Times article today charging that FEMA gave the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) nearly $1 million for fire prevention and safety efforts in violation of a congressional ban.

FEMA told Politico:

The story is factually incorrect. As the Washington Times and interested members of Congress were informed earlier this week, as a result of the continuing resolution, no funds have been provided. Additionally, a similar grant – whose funds were transferred – was originally provided to ACORN for fire prevention and safety activities in FY’07, under the Bush administration.

The last FEMA transfer to ACORN (for $450,000) was Aug. 24, reports Politico — well before Congress cut off funds to ACORN last month.

A statement from ACORN references a letter from U.S. Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana that inspired the Times story:

Senator Vitter was with ACORN before he was against us. Sen. Vitter knows ACORN’s track record on helping communities prevent tragedy, which is why our fire prevention work in low-income communities is important. Senator Vitter worked with ACORN in the wake of Hurricane Katrina to rebuild New Orleans. He provided support letters to many of our projects. It wasn’t until after his prostitution scandal, and until it became politically convenient, that Sen. Vitter changed his tune.

The only real crime is that this very noble organization is not going to be able to help the needy as they have since their inception.

Instead people will be kicked out of their homes and not be able to get the help they need.

Thank you all of you Republi-thugs.

Appropriate of FEMA to correct another Bachmann lie.

After all, there is a disaster area going on inside her head.

Voter supression is the goal of the GOP. Many in the south still mprotect the confederate flag and the “plantation” mentality is rabid yet. They will oppose anything that really helps to get the vote out. They oppose anything that provides a service to the people. They will do anything to continue corporatism and to keep lining their pockets with corporate bribes or also called “influence peddling”. Bachmann a real mouthpiece for the GOP and coming from Minnesota, I can say I’m truely ashamed to be a resident of a state that promotes her shit.

I don’t see either ACORN or FEMA as the story’s main point of interest.
The Washington Times published a story about ACORN’s federal funding. The facts of this story are certainly not scandalous, but publishing the story will keep ACORN in the public’s eye. This was not enough for that paper. They deliberately put small lies between the small truths of the story, changing the meaning and context of the report.
Michelle Bachmann ensured the fictionalized story would reach a larger audience; at the same time she used the fiction to spur her fans in their outrage.
If I was a Doctor of Journalism, I would proclaim the Echo Chamber in robust health.

I just heard some good news this morning…and it came from Michelle Bachmann herself.

ACORN was only defunded for the month of October. As soon as November 1st hits the calendar, they will again recieve all of the money they have coming and are again eligible for any government funding that is available.

Did anyone else hear this?

If so, it is the best news in a long time. This very noble organization can get back to business by doing good things for all of the non-Republicans and make life miserable for all of the non-believers of Mr. Obama.

Huffington Post (if recall served me) posted an article that suggested the bill defunding ACORN is likely an unconstitutional “bill of attainer.” That seems a proper conclusion, and the law must be overturned.

I don’t believe that any of the bills to defund ACORN have been passed yet. All the votes have been amendments to bills moving through congress.

Thanks Michelle for exposing ACORN and the connection with the current administration! It amazes me in light of current findings that anyone would call ACORN an honerable organization!
