In a June 17 press release, the Minneapolis mayor’s office touted the city’s seventh-place showing on a list of "America’s Best Cities for the Outdoors” by Forbes.com. Both Forbes and the mayor credited Minneapolis with 29 outdoor ice rinks. But the mayor was parroting an accounting error or obsolete tally by Forbes, forgetting the dismal day last December when the latest round of budget-related fee hikes and closures left the city with only 23 parks with outdoor ice rinks (PDF list), down from 31 seven years ago. The mayor’s error skates on the thin ice of irony, since commissioners and staff at the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board routinely lay partial blame for their budget woes at Mayor Rybak’s office doorstep.
