Tarryl Clark raised $308,000 in the two months since announcing her campaign to oust U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, according to a campaign announcement today. The St. Cloud Democrat filed federal papers to run for the office in late July and has since received support from numerous labor unions.

Her only opponent for the DFL nomination, Maureen Reed, took in $130,000 during the same period. But Reed had a fairly substantial head start in the money chase: she raised more than $230,000 in the second quarter of 2009. Reed’s campaign says she currently has more than $300,000 in the bank. Last week the medical doctor told Minnesota Public Radio that she intends to run in a primary contest even if she fails to get the DFL endorsement.

The race is likely to be one of the most expensive House campaigns in the country, owing to Bachmann’s national notoriety. The incumbent Republican raised more than $600,000 in the first six months of 2008 — more than any other member of Minnesota’s House delegation — and had nearly $400,000 in the bank. Bachmann has not yet announced her third-quarter haul.

Reed has over 300,000 in the bank according to Tom Scheck over at MPR. Clark is at 260,000? And probably hasn’t paid her bills yet… She paid a fund-raising firm to raise cash for her (they take a 50% cut…) Clark probably is sitting on under 220,000.

MNblue.
Nice spin job. Ignore the fact that reed raise half of what she did in the last quarter. Some would call this reverse momentum.
2400 people contributed to Clark’s effort. How many contributed to Reed?
Clark is a shoe in for the endorsement and if Reeds fund raising continue to fall then her threat to run in a primary also falls by the wayside.
The race between Clark and Reed is all but over.

You’re right… it is a bit of a spin. But, it still stands – Reed has more cash on hand than Tarryl Clark (At least 31,000 more) even though Tarryl had every advantage this quarter in endorsements, PAC contributions, etc.

Reed is riding a groundswell. Tarryl is banking on the party machine and cashing in political chips.

But even the cash on hand is a bit misleading. Reed hired and announced her staff after the quarter.

I hope Clark is cashing in all her chips because she will need every bit of help to beat Bachmann. This most likely will be Clarks lowest fund raising quarter as a number of big money donors don’t get into the race until a candidate proves themselves.

Reed has to have a better quarter next time to stay somewhat viable for a primary run. Clarks 2400 donors indicates that she has yet to tap into the massive lists that all the endorsements she has racked up will bring.

I think this is the biggest 1st quarter any congressional candidate in the state has ever had and it’s one of the best in the country.

Much of Reed’s early support not surprisingly came from familiar turf for her–the medical community and U of M academics. That well appears to be drying up and indeed, it was a very limited pool from which to draw in the first place. Now that the nurses union has endorsed Clark after screening both candidates, it appears the ownership of the health care issue is transferring to Clark. Expect to see national money increasingly swinging Clark’s way over the coming months as well. Reed’s recent whining about union endorsements and talk of challenging the endorsed candidate in a primary isn’t going to help her bank account either. Tom Beckfeld is right–this one’s all over but the shoutin’.

I guess we’ll see, we don’t speak for all the hundreds of thousands of people in the 6th. But my money is on Dr. Maureen Reed.

I’m not in the 6th, but if i did, either Clark or Reed would be preferable to Rep. Bachmann. But Mrs. Bachmann has a very loyal core, so the other candidates have to count on exceeding Rep. Bachmann’s vote total last time

Independence BOB ANDERSON 40643 10.04
Republican MICHELE BACHMANN 187817 46.41
Democratic-Farmer-Labor EL TINKLENBERG 175786 43.43
Write-In WRITE-IN** 459 0.11
Write-In AUBREY IMMELMAN** 20 0.00

It would be easier if they didn’t spend most of their resources fighting each other. They should both run against Bachmann and sort out who represents Democrats without making that the focus
