If a public option ends up in whatever health care reform bill is passed, Gov. Tim Pawlenty says he’d prefer Minnesota not participate. Appearing on ABC’s Top Line today, he said he’d lead the charge to have the state opt out because he “doesn’t believe in government-run health care.”
He told ABC’s David Chalian:
“Well, I don’t know if we would opt out, but I personally would like to opt out because I don’t like government-run health care. And we shouldn’t call it the public option; we should call it what it is, which is government-run health care. They are desperate — the Democrats are thrashing about trying to find some way to get government-run health care into the final package, to embed it in the final package.
“And the rationale is, ‘We have to keep the private sector honest.’ So what’s next then? If you don’t like the price of toilet paper and toothpaste, are we going to have a government-run Target or Wal-Mart to keep the private sector honest? I mean, it’s a ludicrous proposition that government’s going to come in in this space and compete directly with the private sector. Whether it’s opt in, opt out, trigger — I don’t care. I don’t like the idea.”

It must be a terrible embarrassment for Pawlenty that the biggest state-run “government-run health care plan” in the country, MinnesotaCare, is such a success.

there will be a backlash in Mn if Pawlenty tries to stifle a public option. could be the end of his honeymoon

And where, exactly, does Mr. Pawlenty get his own healthcare? Please tell me it’s not a government-run program. No, I’m sure he’s right down there at Blue Cross/Cigna/Kaiser with all the rest of the peons, angrily asking why his mom’s dialysis is suddenly no longer covered.

How disappointing that our governor resorts to shallow talking points of the thoughtless right-wing of his party. I hoped Mr. Pawlenty would elevate the Republican debate.
Most Minnesotans would rather have government run health care than none. The current plans in consideration do not have the federal government running health care in any event. A public insurance option does not mean a goverment takeover of all of health care, as Mr. Pawlenty and his buddies in Medtronic and Mayo know full well.
Yet he’ll play the conservative cards, how ever thoughtless. If he becomes president, will he govern only conservatives, as Mr Bush and Mr Cheney did, ignoring the rest of us?
Disappointing indeed.

You do not speak for me, Mr. Pawlenty. Mind your own business concerning what I as a Minnesotan am allowed to choose from regarding health care. If you want to affect our choices, then you should be running for US congress.

But does he believe in the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus? That is the real question.

I suppose that the most inane statement by Pawlenty(among others -he is reaaly a creep} is that ” I dont like Government run health Care”. Perhaps this Empty Suite should start his campaign with the slogan: LETS GET RID OF MEDICARE. IT IS A COMMIUNISTIC PLOT!!!!
