Bachmann's calling “socialized medicine is the crown jewel of socialism”" is so obviously false and misinformed that it could only emanate from her. When she tells people to tell their elected representatives not to take away "their" health insurance, she's talking about Medicare. Do people who support Bachmann think there's any difference between universal health insurance and Medicare, other than Medicare giving better benefits?

"Social insurance" which is sometimes called "socialized" is not the same as "socialism" which is the ownership of the means of production by the state. Or, what amounts to the same thing, the ownership of the state by the wealthy plutocrats who own the means of production. "Social insurance" which includes Medicare, unemployment insurance, flood plain insurance and other forms of catastrophic coverage, and social security, are forms of "social insurance" which private insurance will not cover. Insuring people against losses or events which the private insurance system will not cover or will do so inadequately is not "socialism."
