Bachmann’s district continues to lead state in foreclosures
Tuesday, December 01, 2009 at 6:00 am
In 2008, Rep. Michele Bachmann’s district had the highest number of foreclosures in Minnesota and the highest rate of foreclosures. Now, as 2009 draws to a close, that trend continues. According to new data from HousingLink and county sheriffs’ offices, the Sixth Congressional District is being disproportionately impacted by the foreclosure crisis despite its representative’s reticence to vote for foreclosure relief legislation.
Bachmann’s district had 1,097 foreclosures in July, August and September of 2009, the highest in the state and almost three times as many as Rep. Tim Walz’s district, which had the state’s lowest number of foreclosures, at 396.
As the Minnesota Independent noted in April, the second-term Republican voted against every major piece of foreclosure-relief legislation brought before the House:
Bachmann voted against five key foreclosure relief bills, including the Mortgage Reform and Anti-Predatory Lending Act, which would set standards for mortgages and reduce predatory lending, and the Neighborhood Stabilization Act, which would provide funds for buying and rehabilitating foreclosed properties in affected neighborhoods. She also opposed the Expanding American Homeownership Act, which allows more people to qualify for FHA-backed mortgages, and the Expand and Preserve Home Ownership Through Counseling Act, which aims to improve financial literacy. Bachmann additionally voted against the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008, a law signed by President Bush that contained many provisions to assist struggling homeowners and also the only one of the bills to become law.
And since April, she successfully spearheaded an effort to strip the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) of Housing and Urban Development funds aimed at preventing foreclosures in low and middle income neighborhoods.
Bachmann did, however, cosponsor a bill “to direct the Architect of the Capitol to acquire and place a historical plaque to be permanently displayed in National Statuary Hall recognizing the seven decades of Christian church services being held in the Capitol from 1800 to 1868, which included attendees James Madison and Thomas Jefferson.”
Here’s a breakdown of foreclosures by Congressional district for the 3rd quarter of 2009:
Bachmann’s office has not responded to the Minnesota Independent’s request for comment.

She will blame it on the Democrats and many of her dyed-in-the-wool conservative “family values” unquestioning supporters will believe it and still vote for her. Those people deserve what they get, not the rest of you.

ahh yes… Michelle.
The woman that brings shame to our great state’s political representation.
How she keeps getting re-elected, I do not know.
I actually saw a bumper sticker yesterday that read:
“Minnesota – 10,000 lakes and one Batsh!t crazy congresswoman”.

The people in her district were STUPID enough to vote her into office a second time, so there’s no reason why they wouldn’t vote her in again. The majority of poor, uneducated, white christians, don’t want to associate themselves with the party that represents a black president. I don’t agree with everything Obama is doing like escalating an illegal occupation in two countries or his decision to help out wall street at the expense of main street. There’s no helping people who are blinded by stupidity and racism.

Comment posted December 1, 2009 @ 12:35 pm
I hope Lisa Kimple is joking (in which case, awesome comment). Its tough to take someone seriously who cannot spell Communism.
I am just impressed this woman got elected again. It’s clear she has no concern for her constituents nor the current foreclosure epidemic.

@Lisa: But would you live in a box if it had been made by a COMMUNIST? Better not risk it … maybe under a bridge? D’oh built by socialistic taxes. Rough life.

Perhaps the 6th District would get the message that Bachmann is hurting their interests if there was a boycott of businesses in the district. Stop spending your money there and supporting the fools who voted for her. When their pocketbooks are affected, they might wake up. On the other hand, maybe not.

Lisa, on the one hand, I hope you are just a crank pulling everyone’s leg. Otherwise, you’re a truly damaged woman. Do you even know what a “socialist policy” is? Will you decline to take Medicare when you’re 65? Have you had the good fortune to lose your employment and your home?
Why don’t you put away the computer and go back under the bridge from which you came. You and your ilk have no idea what true socialism is. And, perhaps you should invest in a dictionary. It is not okay to be willfully ignorant of the world outside your little town. All you know is what people tell you. I doubt you’ve looked anything up or done any research on any of these issues. Otherwise, you wouldn’t say such dumb as a box of hair things.
What are you doing in your location to ease the burden on a homeless family, children who may go for a day or two without food? These are the people who are suffering. These are the people who need help. Michele Bachman is a pig-ignorant harpy with paranoid delusions who wraps herself in God and the flag as if it makes her somehow superior. It’s funny — well perhaps funny isn’t the right word — the awful things that you and your friends accuse liberal’s of happen to the be the things you would do if left to your own devices.
It’s uncharitable of me to think such a thing, but I certainly hope that you face all of these dreadful things that are happening to honest, hard working Americans personally. Maybe then you’ll have the decency to keep your trap shut.
Correct spelling and grammar are not simply for the “elites” — it’s very egalitarian. It’s for everyone equally.

I feel sorry for the people of the 6th District. At this rate, Bachmann can not possibly be re-elected, there won’t be anyone left to vote for her.

the poor in so many places vote against their own interests because of identity politics, so I have no hope they won’t vote for her again
but if anyone is supporting her because she claims to be a Christian, I would ask her what Jesus would want. And he said to take care of each other without any preconditions.

The misplaced anger of the moronic right is infinitely amusing. They blame their problems on East Coast, latte drinking effeminate elites instead of laying the blame where it belongs: with the collusion of government and big business. Their professed “leaders” shill for big business tax breaks and other policies that regularly shaft Joe Six-pack, yet Joe gets all riled up on Glenn Beck about “elites” who have no real power whatsoever. The town hall this summer where the old timer yelled “keep your damn government hands off my Medicare” is a perfect example. Just keep them confused with flag banners, platitudes about patriotism, God and about the anti-American liberals who actually have some decent ideas on fixing some of the problems of this country, all the while undermining them economically, educationally and environmentally. Stupid is as stupid does.

(Let me help you a little here. First you misspelled Communists and District. The term is Socialist Policies and I think you already live in a box of ignorance and intolerance. I doubt you even understand the term Socialism. Some might consider our postal, medicare, school and transportation systems socialistic.)

“I would rather live in a box!!!”
Why don’t you grow up and look around you? We already have socialist policies. For the rich who can take advantage of offshoring and otherwise sheltering their wealth to avoid paying their taxes. We pay their taxes. Specifically, you pay their taxes.
For the largest corporations that are insulated, by your taxes, from failing no matter how bad their decision-making. At this very moment you are paying the interest on money borrowed by our largest banks. They’re not paying it and someone has to.
And by the end of the year your taxes will have gone to paying tens or hundreds of billions of dollars in bonuses to people who earn in a year what you will earn in your entire working career.
So enjoy living in that box. Fat cats on Wall Street will be pleased because it means they have succeeded – through their writing of the laws and making of the rules – in squeezing every last penny out of you that you have. They would like it if we all lived in a box.
Again, wake up and stand up for your own interests and not some slogan that represents you pay while they play.
Cheers!

I live in the 6th district.
We tried in the last election to get rid of her. In fact, she was crapping her pants because it was so close. We all thought, OK, she didn’t lose. But maybe she will see how much her constituency is fed up with her antics, and change. As you can see, she didn’t.
We’ll get her out of office next election!

Kline and Bachmann top the list.
The big free-market-knows-best loud mouths, and their constituents get thrown under the train.
At least there might be some justice if the foreclosures hit the very people that elected these “nay sayers” to office.
Were it Patty Wetterling and Colleen Rowley, in DC instead, there would be caring for the plight in the districts.
Instead, there is Kline. There is Bachmann. There is sadness. There is stress, on families, families that can become torn apart when the stress mounts to undermine the foundations of trust between these families and the community banks and mortgage brokers and others in the housing trade. Democrats care. Republicans vote against whatever is proposed to lessen strain on families.
Go figure – who REALLY represents family values, and who deals in falsehoods and hot-button rhetoric that helps nobody, and is only divisive and devoid of any solutions.
If you are not part of a solution, you are part of the problem – and until voters fix things, problems will remain.

I live in the sixth district, too. There are a lot of bible thumpers here but, even so, the majority in St. Cloud voted against her, probably because of the university population. Still, the number of seriously ignorant people in this district is incredibly high. Anyway, she is an absolutely worthless representative and an embarrassment to this lovely state.

I have mixed emotions about Michele. On the one hand, I am frustrated that a person so grotesquely ignorant can get elected to anything, much less the congress of the United States. But on the other hand, I’m from the South, and it’s gratifying to know that we have no monopoly on world-class kooks. In fact, Michele makes our historical standard bearer crazies, such as Lester Maddox or Jesse Helms, look pretty common sensible by comparison. And I thought Minnesota was a progressive state. Is it just the 6th district that’s dazed and confused?

Perhaps this sort of information will help Mn 6th voters to vote for Tarryl Clark, the likely Democratic Party candidate for Representative from the 6th. Ms Clark – a Mn State Senator – would definitely have supported reforms to reduce foreclosures forcing people out of homes, had she represented Mn 6th instead of the vote-skipping Michele Bachmann in Congress now. And Tarryl Clark will support foreclosure relief should she win election in November, 2010.

C’mon, give Lisa Kimple a break! How could that post not have been tongue-in-cheek? Those of us who poke fun at the wingnut fringe always use mispellings like that. True teabaggers/fringe nuts are also never concise and to the point. They always rant and their letters to local papers always have the postscript “edited for length.” Finally, why would one of those nut jobs even be here? They would fear that God would smite them for dancing with the devil! That’s my bet anyway.

As a person that has taken in 23 foster children, I am very surprised at M.B.’s any social programs attitude. The foster care system is one of our many “socialist” programs in which adults take in children and get PAID by the state. These same children get Medicaid, so the adults who foster them do not have to pay any medical expenses of any kind. The foster parents also get checks twice a year to buy clothing for these kids on top of the monthly checks they receive. Pretty darn good money to be had if you can get enough of those foster kids. 23 sounds like a pretty good number to me.
She and her husband run a mental health clinic. I’m willing to bet they take in a lot of those “socialist” dollars there as well. Medicaid pays for counseling.
Oh and yes, as a congresswoman, she and her family enjoy, at taxpayer’s expense the best health care coverage money can buy. Just another one of those silly “socialist” programs she is always on about that we don’t want and don’t need.
So glad to see she can suck it up and suffer all those things and more that she feels the rest of the populace simply does not need.

I am not very, shale we say political. I would be best described as a “Unitarian Conservative Independent”. I keep my mind open, my mouth closed usually and my purse strings tight, not closed. I believe as a GOD fearing white male that everyone has the right to be equally judged by his or her peers by his or her actions. I try my best to see everyone’s side and not take sides due to sex, race, age or opinion. However, MB has failed to lead or help our district in any positive way. In fact I believe that she is deliberately trying to destroy this district and has blinded the public to such course. She is like the politicians of old who get further and richer on the backs of their constituents. There is no other reason or excuse for her words and her actions that she has taken over the last years. Politicians in the past have been run out of office for fewer offenses. Is it worth impeaching her or will she be the bigger person and step down? You tell us Michelle Bachmann, are willing to face you public and stand down or will you continue to lead your people into ruin.?

I have conservadem, Jim Marshall (GA-8), Suxby Chambliss, and Johnny Isakson representing my district and state. All of them voted with Bachhmann not to help homeowners, and they cited “fiscal responsibility” as the reason for not supporting the bill.
When does people getting kicked out of their homes, taking salary cuts, losing their jobs, applying for and getting social assistance = fiscal responsibility, when the federal and state governments have to turn around and help them in the end anyway?
My point is that, either way, it’s going to cost money, and since the people I cited don’t like spending on social programs, why would they do something that causes spending on social programs to increase?
They’re hypocrites. As long as they, their families, friends, associates, and the corporations are happy, the rest of us don’t matter.
