Rightwing uproar over Best Buy’s ‘Happy Eid al-Adha’ wish to Muslims

By Paul Schmelzer
Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 12:38 pm

Picture 9Allah forbid a major big box retailer send holiday wishes to members of one of the world’s largest religions. But that’s what Best Buy did, including a small message wishing Muslims a “Happy Eid al-Adha” in a circular. And now the Twin Cities-based retailer is facing a boycott by commenters at the rightwing Free Republic forum.

Best Buy, as we reporter earlier, was the target of a rightwing “War on Christmas” campaign in 2006 for not using the word “Christmas” in its holiday marketing, but this year, it’s been upgraded on the American Family Association’s list from anti-Christmas to merely “marginalizing” the Christian holiday.

Now Wonkette reports that Freepers are incensed that the company would give a holiday shout-out to members of the globe’s second-largest religion. Freepers are jamming Best Buy’s customer forums expressing their displeasure (although some commenters are thanking the company for the move). One commenter calls it “sickening” and a “really bad marketing decision” (really? There are around 1.5 billion Muslims world-wide).

Back at the Free Republic board, comments are, unsurprisingly, more pointed.

Commenter “wally_bert” writes: “BB is a Mpls company. Mpls is overrun with ragheads.”

Commenter UB355 writes:

WTH?? This PC crap is KILLING THIS COUNTRY. ENOUGH ALREADY!!

How bout Happy SATAN DAY. BUNCH A FRICKEN MORONS.

Still others think Best Buy should give equal time and have a “Merry Christmas” message. Eid al-Adha actually happens this month — from Nov. 27 to 30 — not next month and, remembering Abraham’s sacrifice of his son, it obligates Muslims to follow the “pillars of Islam,” one of which is charity, by donating to those in need.

UPDATE: Best Buy stands by ‘Happy Eid’ ad, will include ‘Christmas’ in new ads

the response is more of a story than the actual Best Buy holiday greeting.

The issue is that BB has said they won’t wish a “Merry Christmas” but are happy to wish “Happy Eid al-Adha”.
Who cares if there are 1.5 billion Muslims. Islam has presented itself as the religion/political system of persecution and death. We are still waiting for the 1.4 billion “good” Muslims to denounce the jihadist murderers who belong to Islam. Instead we see cheering when Americans are murdered and moronic boobs screaming death to America.

I’ll not shop at Best Buy.

Good wishes to Muslims would not leave such a bad taste in the mouths of non-Muslims IF Best Buy did not have a “no Merry Christmas” stance as of 2006.

Want to make everyone happy? Then wish ALL groups a happy whatever and be done with it. How does Muslim rate above “Christianity” and “Judaism”?

Catering to Muslims above others is inappropriate and just plain bad business, not that I care about Best Buy’s success.

Umm I am also one of the 1.4 Muslims in the world. I denounce terror as Islam’s basis is on peace. What the media brings to people is the part in the Quran when Muslims were to kill any nonbelievers at sight. That ayah or verse is the basis of terror groups like Al-Qidah and Taliban. Islamically they are going against our religion. That verse in the Quran was only applied to those Muslims who were to reclaim Makkah for Islam from nonbelievers. These nonbelievers were to be killed because they spread lies and slandered Islam disgracing its honor plotting its downfall. What the media fails to send to the people is that those nonbelievers, if asked a Muslim for protection, were to be given protection by the Muslims and were not to be harmed. That is Islam, to fight for being allowed to practice our religion and to stop those who extremely tarnish Islam with evil intentions. But enough of that, its a different topic. So overall I do not and will never accept the acts of these terror groups under the name of Islam as acceptable.
For the fact on BB giving Eid-ul-Udha wishes to Muslims, is not a big deal. Christmas wishes are always being spread by everyone, Muslims don’t protest. If BB send us wishes i think its great. But if you are feeling they should send wishes to other religions then i believe you are correct too. They should show equality because each man is equal in the sight of God, as all 3 major religions show. If you are against any wishes to a certain religion at all, Islam in this case, then pray that racism and all predigest against another human is lost for until then our world is doomed.

Also if a religion’s world-wide view is based on the actions of one group killing innocents, please go ahead and google for knowledge’s sake Israels activities in Palestine this past year. Already a 3rd world country it is being demolished, its innocents destroyed kids women and the old. So logically every Israeli is not bad, neither is every American which i am PROUD to be. Rather people of certain religions exist who wish to rule over others. Please do not blame all Muslims for extremists’ actions.
And finally America has freedom of religion as listed above, so don’t hate appreciate :D
happy Hanukka, Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and Eid Mubarak.

m****poo, DF, apparently you don’t know anything about Christmas, either. The universal celebration as we know it (comprised as it is of largely pre-Christian, pagan symbolism) has been around for roughly 100 years. Christmas in America owes as much, if not more, to Godey’s Lady’s Book and its editor’s search for a common national holiday as it owes to the Bible.

The Solstice was the reason for celebrating this season for tens of thousands of years before Christianity jumped on the bandwagon. And as to those nitwits who are screaming about Islam being the religion of Death and Destruction and Intolerance, apparently they haven’t looked very closely at all at the history of Christianity, which pretty much has an unassailable lead as a cause of Death and Destruction and Intolerance over the last 17 centuries. Celebrate your own holidays, celebrate those of others, I don’t care — but don’t try to tell me that YOUR religion is going to dictate which holidays *I* can celebrate; it ain’t gonna happen.

DianeS
Comment posted November 25, 2009 @ 5:19 pm

In previous years, BB had the policy of using Happy Holidays and were criticized for it. So now they are trying to include all religions and are criticized for that. Its Happy Eid now, because Eid is celebrated at the end of November, it will be Merry Christmas later when we approach Christmas time.

All of you boycotter and haters are truly anti-American. Freedom of Religion and respect for the religious beliefs of others is one of the cornerstones of our democracy.

Ward

The part I always find baffling/amusing is that all the religions discussed here are branches off of Judaism. They all worship the same god, and use many of the same texts. With various inclusions for various branches.

Why do religions seem to have the worst fights between those that agree on much.

As to Best Buy, It’s a shame you can’t simply say happy holidays which is inclusive of all. But so many misguided folks think they are being slighted if they aren’t mentioned by name.

Believe what you will, In a perfect world you will all get the hereafter you profess in, All of it. Personally unless someone convinces me otherwise, I’ll fade quietly into the night.

Comment posted November 27, 2009 @ 1:55 am

I just took the time to read all of these comments. I just want to say that I don’t see anything wrong at all with Best Buy wishing us Muslims a Happy Eid. Those of you who are getting fired up over one small and positive thing about our religion, chances are you probably haven’t gotten to really know any of the Muslims around you. Many of the Muslims in America (and I say many because I don’t know every Muslim in America obviously), grow up just like any other American, love this country like any other American, and live their life simply according to their religion without extremist acts on their part. We’re just like any other human beings. Simply because there are people who committed terrorist acts and are Muslim does not mean that we associate ourselves with them and claim that what they did was right. I am simply saying that a lot of Muslims in America, myself included, live our lives normally, perhaps more normal than you think. Some of the comments above mentioned other people in past history that were of other religions, and I thought that was a good point to bring up. Every race, religion, group of people or whatever has had their time in which they’ve undergone some kind of discrimination or hatred from others. That’s human nature. When you don’t educate yourself enough to learn about those around you, and hear second hand information of course you are going to hate the people you barely or truly know anything about.

If you do want this to get into a messy argument, then yes. Look at the past. There have been atrocities that have occurred where millions have been killed, and the people that caused those tragedies weren’t all Muslim. Timothy McVeigh is another one. He was white…and a terrorist. But I don’t hate Caucasian Americans at all. I don’t see why anyone should hate us. At least try and learn a little more about the people who are your neighbors and are more peaceful group of people than their media counterparts.

Overall…thank you Best Buy for acknowledging us in a positive light for once. We all appreciate it, and are happy that you have taken a moment with us to wish us a happy holiday.

As a Muslim American, I am baffled by the amount of anti-Islamic spews on this comment board. I am utterly amazed that people believe that the extremist stances of 1% of the Muslim population epitomizes the beliefs of the rest of us. Just as we do not associate white Protestants with the KKK or working class youths with skinheads, we expect to not be associated with extremist groups who mold sacred Islamic values to there advantage.

William Blake once stated that “to generalize is to be an idiot” and that quote is completely applicable in this situation. Labeling and stereotyping people does not cause any progress; it merely inflames hatred and tension. This discrimination and xenophobia against Muslims is sickening and it makes one wonder about the intellectual state of America.

Since when was America founded on intolerance and bigotry? Didn’t we have one of the world’s bloodiest civil wars in order to fight prejudice and discrimination? America’s fundamental values most not be forgotten; everyone is entitled to freedom of religion and respect. So please save your dehumanizing comments to yourself and before you even decide to preach defaming statements about Islam, consider whether or not they have any intellectual and democratic basis.

Yes, Mr. Schmelzer, it is, in fact, a really bad marketing decision. The vast majority of the 1.5 billion muslims reside outside the U.S. What do you suppose is the Christian to muslim ratio here in this country? Best Buy has stores in other countries where it can use whatever local seasonal greeting is appropriate. Here in America, it’s MERRY CHRISTMAS. It’s the day we celebrate the incarnation of God the Son. Muslims do not believe Jesus is the Son of God. Islam seeks to abolish Judiasm, Christianity, and any other opposing belief, and where it isn’t abolished, such followers are reduced to second-class citezins. “Gun-toting freepers” didn’t murder 3,000 Americans on September 11th.

i applaud BB’s decision. i am not religious in the slightest and i grew up on “merry christmas” instead of “happy holidays”. to me, “happy holidays” is far more PC than mentioning specific religious/cultural holidays, and i personally hate being PC. so to acknowledge holidays of other popular faiths and cultures is a good non-PC thing if you ask me. thank you best buy, for realizing that it is better to respect individuals, and not the hivemind of society.

@Paul Renwick, your comments are ignorant. While it is true that the majority of muslims OUTSIDE of America wish destruction upon our country, the majority of muslims IN America are proud American citizens, have moderate/liberal beliefs, and do not wish for conservative islam/sharia to be inflicted here in the land of freedom. I have many muslim friends and coworkers and not a single one of them support the fundamentalism that exists outside America.

“Gun-toting freepers” may not have murdered 3000 americans but they seem to be bigoted, xenophobic, and racist since they do not have respect for other cultures and faiths.
