maureenreed1The campaign of Dr. Maureen Reed says it will not abide by the DFL endorsement should it go to her opponent, state Sen. Tarryl Clark, the St. Cloud Times reports. Reed’s campaign says she hasn’t gotten a fair shake from key DFL constituencies, mainly labor unions.

“We believe this is the most Democratic thing you can do — to bring it to a vote,” Reed’s campaign manager, Jason Isaacson, said. “We think it is important for every Democrat to make a choice to see who it is they want to replace Michele Bachmann.”

Reed’s campaign says it was shut out of labor union screenings and not interviewed for endorsements.

Minnesota’s primaries are in September, and a primary battle would prolong the race for the DFL nominee by six months.

Kay Wolsborn, a political-science professor at the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University told the Times that the primary dynamic would set up well for Bachmann.

“This is good news for Michele Bachmann because it divides the Democratic Party,” Wolsborn said.
