The Stonewall DFL, the LGBT caucus within the DFL, voted this weekend to endorse Matt Entenza for governor in 2010. It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise: Stonewall has endorsed Entenza in every campaign he’s run since his first campaign for the Minnesota House in 1994.

“Entenza has a long history of advocating for equal rights for all Minnesotans,” the group said in a statement Sunday. “Believing it’s wrong for the government to allow some adults full rights as citizens and deny others those same rights, he co-authored the first Minnesota bill for marriage equality.”

Stonewall said Entenza’s actions in support of the community include opposition to a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, support for domestic partner benefits for state employees, and authoring legislation to increase the penalties faced by those convicted of crimes based on sexual orientation.

“I am so proud to have earned the endorsement of Stonewall DFL,” Entenza said in a statement. “I am committed to running a campaign and having an administration that reflects the rich diversity of our state. Stonewall DFL stands strong for equal rights – as I always have and always will. They will be an invaluable partner in making Minnesota work again for all Minnesotans.”

This would be the same Stonewall DFLers who endorsed the gay marriage hating Amy Klobuchar over the GLBT equal rights espousing Ford Bell in 2006, etc.

This would be a completely different Stonewall DFL Board of Directors this time around.

Then maybe they could explain why GLBT Minnesotans benefit from picking ONE candidate to support when nearly all the DFL candidates are 1000% better on GLBT issues than ANY of the Republican candidates?

I cannot think of one single positive reason for such an endorsement by an advocacy group. It sounds to me that this board isn’t one bit smarter than the board that endorsed anti-gay marriage Amy over pro-gay marriage Ford.

Mark,

If you or anyone is not happy with your Stonewall DFL caucus leadership (assuming you’ve taken the 5 minutes and 20 bucks it takes to become a member), I suggest you run for the board in April or vote for someone to come on the board that you more closely identify with politically. Agree or disagree with us at least we are doing something to get pro-LGBT people elected instead of talking about it. I think once you see first hand all the things a group of 15 volunteers is doing to advance LGBT people statewide in the DFL Party you will have a much different take on what it is we are or aren’t doing well enough with a yearly budget of about 3-5k. Our next meeting is Jan 24. If you would like a few moments to speak to us please let me know. I would happily recognize you during my report. Our April General membership date where we elect new officers will also be set at that meeting. If I’ve missed your attendence at any of the meetings I’ve been at the past 6 years I do apologize.

Respectfully,

-D

Chair, Stonewall DFL

Del, I’m a little too old school (and a little too straight) for you, I think. I was raised to believe that any organization that took sides in a primary without clear and compelling cause to do so, was run by foolish people seeking to enhance their personal clout at the expense of their organization.

I cannot think of one single reason for Stonewall DFL to endorse Entenza over all the other gay-friendly candidates. The fact that you can endorse does not mean you should. And the unions would all do well to take that advice as well.
