Bachmann cosponsors resolution to ‘protect’ Christmas

Bachmann Santa‘Tis the season: Members of Congress — including Minnesota’s Michele Bachmann — are again gearing up for another “War on Christmas” with  a resolution that “strongly disapproves of attempts to ban references to Christmas and expresses support for the use of these symbols and traditions by those who celebrate Christmas.” Bachmann is one of 27 members of Congress supporting the measure.

But Think Progress notes some irony:  The measure comes eight weeks after House Minority Leader John Boehner derided Democrats for wasting time during an economic crisis with a bill commemorating Chinese philosopher Confucius.

Here’s the full text of the bill:

Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected for use by those who celebrate Christmas.

Whereas Christmas is a national holiday celebrated on December 25; and

Whereas the Framers intended that the First Amendment of the Constitution, in prohibiting the establishment of religion, would not prohibit any mention of religion or reference to God in civic dialog: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives–

(1) recognizes the importance of the symbols and traditions of Christmas;

(2) strongly disapproves of attempts to ban references to Christmas; and

(3) expresses support for the use of these symbols and traditions by those who celebrate Christmas.

Sounds like this would “respect” an establishment of religion to me.

I used to be an active Christian, but I fell away. In a way, more from habit, I’d like to go back. But when I see so-called Christians like Bachmann doing what they do, I wonder why I’d ever want to got to church again? Ever!

She says that she’s a fuzzball, which some people believe is made of belly button lint from Limbaugh and Cheney, but in reality she’s a dingleberry.

Bahahaha these “Christmas symbols” are mostly pagan anyway. Let the ignorant little weasel protect the sacred celebration of the feast of the Son of Isis/winter solstice.

“Evergreen boughs were sometimes carried as totems of good luck and were often present at weddings, representing fertility. The Druids used the tree as a religious symbol, holding their sacred ceremonies while surrounding and worshipping huge trees.”

Umm, there is this little thing called the Constitution.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion”

But, Bachmann and her idol “W” really don’t care what that document says.

This seems a lot like the “Defense of Marriage Act”. The proposed bill creates fear of a non-existent threat.

Note to Bachmann – no one is trying to prevent you from celebrating Christmas. Really.

If there were flags, this would get a Funny Flag.

Why doesn’t she just come straight out and say she needs cash?

Predictable pandering by politicans posing as pious.

What does their nonbinding resolution do that the First Amendment doesn’t already have covered – free expression, including religious expression?

It establishes Christianity as a preferred religion for the House of Representatives, the legislative body prohibited from establishing religion or prohibiting the free exercise there of

I can’t wait to learn how Bachmann will condemn those who deny fellow Minnesota 5th District Representative Ellison his freedom of religion as a Muslim in the face of continued attacks …. she’s probaby done that already .. anybody help me with a source?

Where’s the link to the “Sense of the House” resolution co-sponsored by Rep. Bachmann celebrating the Festival of Lights?

Oh.

Is this the only bone Michele can throw us? Protecting Christmas symbols?

Well that’ll be great when she’s campaigning. “I was against the Credit Card Bill of Rights. I was against Healthcare Reform. I was against funding for the St. Cloud bridge (but I showed up for the ribbon cutting!). But look, I wrote the resolution to protect Christmas symbols!”

Good luck with that re-election thingy Michele.
