Senate candidate scrubs racist comments from Twitter

mikeparryRepublican State Senate candidate Mike Parry has scrubbed more than 43 tweets after fellow Twitterers found racist and homophobic content in the candidate’s Twitter stream. Parry is running to replace retiring Sen. Dick Day in southeastern Minnesota.

Among the tweets erased by Parry was a May 27 comment about President Obama:

“read the exclusive on Mr O in Newsweek. He is a Power Hungry Arrogant Black Man.”

Another tweet read, “What’s with the Dems and Pedophiles?”

And another erroneously interpreted voting laws: “Only those serving overseas can vote absentee!”

At the Republican endorsement convention in Faribault, Parry said he wants “a senator that is not worried about being politically correct. Welfare is meant to be a safety net, not a hammock.”

Parry did not immediately return the Minnesota Independent’s request for comment on the scrubbed tweets.

Since when did a reference to pedophilia become homophobic? Are you suggesting that “gay” is synonymous with “pedophile”?

That’s a Christian Right thing – they equate homosexuality with pedophilia… odd considering all the Republican politicians outed as closet homosexuals.

Dennis, Andy didn’t connect the “gay” with “pedophile”. I didn’t see that being suggested. But I did wonder where the homophobic came from, and isn’t it weird that the story is about racism but there’s this other line about Dems? Holy Crap. Who the hell does this Mike Parry think he is? What an ass.

So mentioning someone’s race is racist? I’ll remember that when a liberal talks about the poor black people or the amazing things a black person did. Wait, never mind, only liberals can accuse others of being racists.

Exactly Mazid. Parry is big with Christian conservatives and earlier this year, the hate crimes bill was dubbed “Pedophile protection act” by the religious right. Right around that time, Parry tweeted that he was meeting with some Christian conservatives.

Loki, does he criticize whites and include a mention of their race? No, just Obama.

I’m glad conservatives resent charges of racism, but you don’t turn that resentment into a purge of racists. I’ll happily state that most conservatives aren’t racists, but you need to admit that racists are almost always conservative. While conservatives refuse to do anything about it, you’re subject to charges of racism.

Loki,

Mike Parry was perfectly capable of saying, “He is a Power Hungry Arrogant Man.” That would have gotten the same point across just as nicely. The use of “Black” was unnecessary, and just goes to show how deeply embedded racism is in white Americans. Even I’ll admit to bouts of unconscious racism. It’s not right, there’s no justifying it; it’s just the reality of the neighborhood I was raised, the history I was taught, and the baggage my ancestors are still passing on to me.

I find it interesting that Mike Parry is quoting Bill Clinton. I loved the “safety net, not a hammock” line when Bill Clinton said it when running for president.

As someone working in human services, I see some people who would get stuck in the hammock if not for welfare reform. Sadly, I also see many people with limited capacity due to mental health issues, struggling to obtain or maintain a job. Nazi Germany put people like this to death. We’re still trying to figure out what to do.

you’ll be comforted to know that it’s hard to get welfare, it’s temporary, and it provides insufficient money to cover a family’s needs.

Oh, and it’s a trivial percentage of total government spending, unless you count social security, medicare and medicaid as “welfare” – if these are part of it, go ahead and kick those lazy retired old folks out of their social security and medicare hammocks, if you can

isn’t Obama just as white as he is black? Why do so many white people get hung up on 1/2 of his heritage that is of his father’s side? Doesn’t his mother count?

Funny, I never heard of Conservatives decrying Power Hungry WHITE Men. I guess if you’re a white man discussing your contempt for a black man, those qualifiers of race are a must to use.

Some day the GOP will come to terms that the USA can be run by a Democrat who just happens to be 1/2 black.

“So mentioning someone’s race is racist?” – Loki

He used it as an adjective to punctuate two derogatory statements about Obama in a context that should have had nothing to do with his race – you tell me if that means he thinks “Black” means something positive or negative.

Also, the reason people were linking the pedophile comment and homophobia was that Parry posted the tweet “the day after the New York Times published an editorial on the Matthew Shepard Act and a week after it was passed in the House.”

unless of course the racists we are talking about happen to be black, hispanic or asian.

and just goes to show how deeply embedded racism is in white Americans.

believe it or not white folks didnt invent racism. racism is embedded deeply in every race. that statement you just said happens to be racist. that would be like me saying expecting handout because of the color of their skin is embedded in black america.

mrejr, perhaps the “white half” of Obama is not so not worthy historically since that matches the previous 42 presidents! Ya think?
So, maybe the half that is the very first ever, would be the one most noteworthy.
We as a people tend to dwell on “firsts” moreso than “another one”.

And as for welfare dawdlers, yes there are some career families on the dole I’m certain, but, in a time when many companies are bolstering their bottom line of PROFIT by laying off thousands of good employees, this is hardly a time to point at the needy and paint them all with a broadbrush as lazy.

Also, using this mans terminology, should we by referring to “those stubbornly obstructionist WHITE GOP congressmen? OR, those ridiculously biased WHITE talking heads on FAUX newz?
And you are stuck with the fact that the Christian right and many of it’s politicians in office continue to attempt to tie pediphiles and Gays together, mostly with FOX like “facts” that fail any kind of scrutiny by factchecking or common sense.

And I for one am still curious just WHO it was that gay male prostitute/web porn star was visiting in the Bush White House. The guy given press credentials and visited 197 times according to reports…..aren’t YOU curious? I’m guessing, another gay hating, closeted gay in the former administration. And wow, Rove just got divorced, could that be related?

You mean pederasts.

The fact is that 88% of the cases were/are men abusing adolescent boys. The CC has a pretty ugly homosexual problem which I hope they get under control soon.

Loki,

No, mentioning someone’s race isn’t racist, but are you really so far gone that you don’t connect the dots here? I mean, seriously, if a black person called you an “ignorant, pathetic white man,” you wouldn’t see anything wrong with the fact that they added “white man” to their insults? Has Glenn Beck really convinced his zombie army that anything short of overt racism is not racist? There’s no sense in denying something we all know is true: You can’t call someone an “angry black person” and pretend like you just randomly included his/her race in there. I’ve gotten so sick of the right-wing just denying things they don’t want to acknowledge.

Rob
Comment posted January 6, 2010 @ 11:52 am

And yes, I would agree with some of the comments on here that while most conservatives are not racist, most racists are conservative. That point is maybe unnecessary, since conservatism means defending the status quo over change – aka keeping other races down. I’m getting fed up with all this ‘tea party’ garbage to try to hide racism, too. George Bush put us in a huge HUGE HUGE deficit with all his spending and Obama has spent FAR less… and only NOW do these people come out and complain about how there is too much government spending. Let’s be real, a black guy is in office and they’re freaking out because they’re too stupid that they actually believe black people are inferior and dangerous. Yeah, I said it. And this is coming from a white suburban guy who grew up in a somewhat racist family. I’m just calling it like I see it, and it’s pathetic. How absurd is it to be angry about the color of someone’s skin? They didn’t choose it, and more importantly, IT IS JUST A COLOR.
