Daily Beast: Actor Tim Robbins gave to Bachmann

Actor Tim Robbins, well known for his liberal politics, donated $500 to Michele Bachmann’s maiden campaign for Congress in 2006, the Daily Beast reports.

Robbins has been in the news for a marital split over the summer from actor Susan Sarandon, also famous for her outspokenness on behalf of progressive causes and candidates.

The Daily Beast didn’t have a comment from Robbins or Bachmann, but another surprising recipient of Robbins’ largesse, Rep. J.D. Hayworth of Arizona, said he could only speculate about why he got money from Robbins:

“Maybe because I covered the Durham Bulls as a sports broadcaster in the late 1970s and early ’80s? Maybe because I used to frequently rent Bob Roberts back in the ’90s?” Hayworth wondered, mentioning two of Robbins’ starring vehicles. “All I can say is, ‘Thank you!’ I hope he enjoyed the Christmas card.”

Hayworth and Bachmann were among 10 Republicans to whom Robbins distributed $5,000, the Daily Beast reports.

Bachmann counts other actors among her supporters, including Jon Voight, who traveled to Washington, D.C. to tell opponents of health care reform who she gathered on the U.S. Capitol steps, “We’re becoming a socialist nation, and Obama is causing civil unrest in this country. … I say that they’re taking away God’s first gift to man: our free will.”
