Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and a host of other Democrats addressed the party’s delegation this morning at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel. The brief speeches were mostly rah-rah calls for unity and passion heading into the stretch run of the campaign. ”Are you fired up and ready to go?” Klobuchar asked, before trying out a line from tonight’s scheduled address to the full Democratic convention. “Are you tired of sub-prime leadership in Washington?”
Klobuchar then introduced former vice president Walter Mondale. After remarking on the unprecedented diversity of the state’s delegates (roughly half are ethnic minorities), Mondale stressed the importance of uniting behind Barack Obama and Joe Biden. “Democrats usually defeat themselves when they get defeated,” he told the group. “My plea to you is let’s get this family together and win.”
Next up was U.S. Senate candidate Al Franken, buoyed by a recent poll showing him in a dead heat with Sen. Norm Coleman. Franken is staying in Denver for just one day and is not expected to address the DNC. He told an anecdote about Paul Wellstone running alongside his son during high school cross country meets and shouting encouragement, then relating it to his own political contest. “I’m taking Norm Coleman,” he promised. “I’m not going to flag. I’m feeling so good about this race.”
