RNC Chairman Steele mirrors Bachmann: God chose me

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele says he has the job he does because God “placed” him there. His statement mirrors those of fellow Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann, who has asserted several times that she went into politics because God asked her to.

On Pat Robertson’s CBN news, Steele said:

A lot of people think that this is about me. It is not about me. I’m not defined by this job. When this job is over I will go back to doing something else but God, I really believe has placed me here for a reason because who else and why else would you do this unless there’s something inside of you that says right now you need to be here to do this and there’s going to be a lot of ugly that comes after you but if you stay true and you stay faithful to what brought you into this party and why you believe so much that what this administration is doing is wrong for America then I’m good. You can say whatever you want about me. You can write whatever you want about me. I sleep very well at night Washington. I really do because I know who has my back: the people of America and that is what we fight for everyday.

Steele’s comments are reminiscent of statement made by Rep. Michele Bachmann. Last year, she told WorldNetDaily that she would run for president if God told her to:

“If I felt that’s what the Lord was calling me to do, I would do it,” she answered. “When I have sensed that the Lord is calling me to do something, I’ve said yes to it. But I will not seek a higher office if God is not calling me to do it. That’s really my standard.

“If I am called to serve in that realm I would serve,” she concluded, “but if I am not called, I wouldn’t do it.”

She originally ran for Congress because God asked her to:
In 2006 she said:

God then called me to run for the United States Congress, and I thought ‘What in the world will that be for?’ and my husband said ‘You need to do this,’ and I wasn’t so sure, and we took 3 days and we fasted and we prayed and we said, ‘Lord. Is this what you want? Is this your will?’ and after long about the afternoon of day two, he made that calling sure. And its been now 22 months that I’ve been running for United States Congress. Who in their right mind would spend 2 years to run for a job that lasts 2 years? You’d have to be absolutely a fool to do that. You are now looking at a fool for Christ. This is a fool for Christ.

why would anyone become a janitor for 18k a year? oh, cause god asked them to. i think a better explanation for these people running for an office that gives them a platform to run their mouths, appear on tv, and sell books is narcissistic personality disorder.

It’s not such an odd thing for people to feel a “calling” or a “vocation”, inspired by their connection with God. These comments are similar to anything you would read from George Washington, Abigail Adams, or thousands of ordinary folks trying to follow their conscience or spiritual hunches.
Don’t you have anything better to do than to irrationally attack people you don’t even know?

I distrust those who know so well what God wants them to do as it always seems to coincide with their own desires.

West Village,
I believe that people CAN get a calling from God. My problem with people like Palin, Steele, Bachmann, Gingrich, etc, is that although they say God inspired them to seek these positions and that they are “Christians,” they do not live the lives of Christians. Everything they do is either for themselves, their friends, or big corporations. Jesus said give away all you own to the poor and follow HIM. They care little for the poor and disadvantaged. My Bible says that these are the people we should take care of. So, yes, I have a problem with them using Christianity for their own personal gain. They are the modern day Pharisees and Sadducees.

WestVillage states:

“Don’t you have anything better to do than to irrationally attack people you don’t even know?”

As an atheist I attack irrationality, be that in form of worshiping Odin, Zeus or our modern “God”. Furthermore, Ms. Bachmann is a representative(and an embarrassing one at that) from my great state of Minnesota.

How can you “believe” you’re called by God? Wouldn’t God make it plain? Sit you down and tell you about it, with a convincing demonstration of throwing lightening bolts if there’s any uncertainty? Or instantly move you where he wants you to be, letting the impossible change of location show you that God must have done it, unless someone invented a Star Trek transporter? It just seems someone as powerful as God wouldn’t have to rely on you figuring out subtle clues.

All the Christofascists should remember that when YOU talk to God, you’re praying, but when God talks to YOU, you’re nuts!

Good quote. It would be more compelling if G-d was telling these politicians to do something contrary to their own self interests. Much of Jesus’ ministry seemed that way to me. Amazing to me how some people bring in the Ultimate Endorser to elevate their candidacy above all others.

health care reform train has left the station with President Obama at the wheel,” the delightfully hilarious Michael Steele used his savvy metaphorical skills to answer this pressing conundrum.
